Working with Tiamat, the Dragon Goddess
Tiamat is one of the most primal and demanding powers a practitioner can approach. She is the ancient Dragon Mother of the Babylonian creation myths, the salt-water abyss, the chaos that existed before the ordered gods imposed their structure. In Draconian and Left-Hand Path work she is far more than a mythological figure. She is the living current of the Inner Dragon, the force that dissolves the old self so that something stronger can be born.
Working with Tiamat is not gentle self-help. Her current is transformative in the most literal sense. It can dismantle identity, intensify desire, and push a person into territories of consciousness that feel overwhelming. Those who approach her seriously often describe the experience as being unmade and then reforged. This is exactly why many are drawn to her, and exactly why casual curiosity is a poor reason to begin.
The material below is adapted from established Draconian practice, particularly the work of Asenath Mason, and shaped for practical use. It is intended for those who already have some experience with intense spirit contact and who understand that certain doors, once opened, do not close neatly again.
Preparation
You will need:
- Black candles
- A chalice of red wine
- A ritual blade
- Your own blood
- Parchment
- Tiamat’s sigil
- Space to work undisturbed
The Key of the Night is traced in the air above the altar with a blooded blade. It serves as a focal point for opening the gateway. Only your own blood should be used.
Prepare yourself as carefully as you prepare the space. This is not a working to enter while distracted, exhausted, or emotionally unstable.
The Invocation
Set up the altar and light the black candles. Using the ritual blade, draw a small amount of your blood and trace the lines of Tiamat’s sigil with it. Place a drop on your third eye.
Focus on the sigil and chant repeatedly:
Ummu Tiamat, Ummu Hubur.
When the atmosphere in the room has thickened, take the blooded blade and trace the Key of the Night in the air above the altar. Then speak the first part of the invocation:
Ho Ophis Ho Archaios, Ho Drakon Ho Megas.
Mother of Darkness, Queen of demons and abominations of the earth, You hold the Universe in your coiled embrace. Yours are the keys to the Kingdom of the Night. Your timeless essence is the soul of the world. Your blood is the vital force of every living being. You swallow the Light and cover the world with the Veil of the Night. In your womb the Black Flame is born, The fire of creation and destruction Which is more ancient than Time.
Ancient Dragon Goddess, Rise up from the Void.
Vibrate the word VOVIN eleven times.
Visualise black, flame-like shadows rising from the ground and filling the space. See and feel them wrapping around you and merging with your body and awareness. When the sense of presence is strong, continue:
Come to me, Tiamat. I offer my flesh as the Temple for your Primal Essence. I offer my soul as the altar for your Infinite Power.
Mother of Monsters, Cloak me in your Wings of Shadow. Fill this ritual space with your Black Fire. Empower me through your blood. Lift my soul on your flaming breath And let me rise up to the stars.
Open the Gates of the Night for me So that I may meet you in the heart of the Void Where each thought, desire, and wish can become eternal.
Grant me the power to destroy and create, To burn worlds with your fiery breath And to shape them anew from your flesh and blood.
Mother of all souls, Grant me the keys to your Kingdom of Black Waters. Open the eyes of my soul so that I may see through illusions. Awaken my lust for knowledge and power. Arouse the Desire of Divinity. Let your Black Flames consume me from within And forever burn in the abyss of my heart. For Illumination is not found in Light but in Darkness.
Visualise yourself surrounded by a vast black ocean. At first the waters are still. As the invocation continues they begin to rise and move. The air in the room often feels charged at this stage.
Continue:
Mother of Gods, I seek your energy, your life, your limitless essence. I call you forth to enter my being. In the Abyss of Chaos I claim your heritage of blood. In Darkness I seek to rest in your eternal arms.
Tiamat, awaken and rise. I drink your immortal blood and I offer my own in return.
Place a few drops of your blood on the sigil and burn the parchment. As it burns, drink from the chalice. Visualise the dissolving, empowering essence of Tiamat filling you. Feel the Black Flame rising and consuming weakness from the inside. Stay with this sensation.
When ready, speak the final section:
I am the wanderer on the Path of the Ancients. When I walk, I tread upon the body of the Dragon. When I sleep, I rest in Dragon’s arms. When my soul flies, it rises on the Dragon’s seething breath.
My body is the flesh of the Dragon. My blood is the liquid fire from Dragon’s jaws. My soul was born in the womb of the Dragon.
I pierce the Veil of the Night with Dragon’s Eyes And I gaze into Eternity Where my Will exists alone.
To see is to know. To experience is to understand. To die and re-awaken is to become Divine.
I am the Black Flame that burns in the core of every heart. I deliver and I devour. I am the Temple and the Altar. I am the Dragon. I am Tiamat.
Allow the vision and the sense of contact to continue until the current naturally subsides. Do not force an ending and do not cut the experience short out of fear.
Optional Possession-Style Meditation
After the main invocation, or on a separate occasion once contact is established, you may use the following meditation.
Sit or lie down. Return to the image of the black ocean. Hear the movement of the water. Visualise the dark water rising and pouring into the space until you are completely submerged. Let thoughts and ordinary identity dissolve in that darkness.
At a certain point the water becomes warm and supportive. You find yourself lifted above it, existing as pure awareness. The ocean is no longer a flat surface but a vast surrounding presence, and at its centre is the Void. In that Void, creation and destruction answer to will alone.
Rest in the Dragon consciousness for as long as the current remains strong. When it begins to recede, return slowly and deliberately to ordinary awareness.
Necessary Warning
This is not a beginner working. Tiamat’s current is intense, dissolving, and long-lasting. Rituals of this type open gateways in the self that do not simply close when the candles are blown out. Casual experimentation is unwise. If you do not already have experience with demanding spirit contact and the ability to remain centred under pressure, do not begin here.
Those who approach her with respect, clarity, and genuine readiness often find the work deeply transformative. Those who approach her lightly tend to discover that the Dragon does not play.

Grimoire of Tiamat by Asenath Mason
Tiamat is the Primal Dragon Goddess, the first one, who gave birth to the gods of the universe”, the Mother of Everything, the self-procreating womb, the source of all life and all manifestation. The work described in this book was inspired by the Babylonian epic known as the “Enuma Elish”, one of the oldest Creation myths in the world. The Grimoire of Tiamat presents a complete system of magick based around the Mesopotamian primordial goddess Tiamat and the eleven demons she created to aid her in her fight against the new order of gods lead by Marduk. The book is divided into three sections: first, a lengthy introduction of the theme and cosmology, followed by individual workings for each of the eleven demon-gods, and then a concluding appendix of thematically related workings focusing directly on Tiamat and Kingu. The second section, The Children of Tiamat, presents ways of working with each of the eleven demon-gods, prefaced with an explanation of the techniques that follow and the use of the Key of Night, a master sigil that is employed throughout the workings as a way to access the Nightside. The final section of The Grimoire of Tiamat is an appendix that returns the focus to Tiamat as it takes the form of a guided meditation within the waters of Tiamat, a ritual for two participants invoking Tiamat and Kingu, a rite of malefica, and a discussion of the underworld in Mesopotamian belief, followed by a chthonic guided path working.

I love Tiamat and enjoy my interaction with her. I would consider myself a close friend. To gain her trust, offer to be her vessel in our realm. Be cautioned: she is the most powerful entity I have ever met. When inviting entities I state that I, and only I, am in control of my body and mind. Then I offer my senses for their enjoyment. When they possessed me, I eat what they like, drink what they like, and try things they have not yet done. When we have finished, I advise them to go in peace.
I gained Tiamat’s trust by journeying to her realm and flying with her and asking for nothing.
Dream well.
I was an atheist when I did 44g of fresh mushrooms and randomly told the universe, “I don’t care what demon, devil, or god answers, but I will follow anyone who will give me what I want.”
After that Tiamat came to me and said, “I CAN DO THAT FOR YOU”. We got to talking and I agreed to follow her and she has been at my side ever since.
Ahhh Tiamat is such a sweety and loves to help others. She is also the most beautiful and lovely being I’ve ever met; she is truly my first, first, first love! I highly recommend her company to everyone! The ritual looks fun–and personally I’d completely entrust my entire being and dragon soul to my beloved dragon Tiamat forever and ever with no reservations at all. Tiamat is the best!! I can’t even begin to describe how overwhelmed with love I am for her and how great she is!
