The toxicity of pennyroyal oil is well recognized, with many documented reports of adverse events and fatalities. In humans, consumption of 10 mL of the oil has resulted in moderate to severe toxicity, with case reports of fatalities 1 to 2 hours after consumption of 15 mL.
There is some evidence that pennyroyal oil can cause abortions by causing the uterus to contract. But the dose needed for this effect could kill the mother or cause her life-long kidney and liver damage. Pennyroyal leaf tea seems to be able to start menstruation, which could also threaten a pregnancy.

In Southern Traditions- Pennyroyal is widely thought to be a powerful Guardian and to Ward Off Evil. To break a hex, a jinx, or a curse, some people mix Pennyroyal with Nettle and Graveyard Dirt and sprinkle it on their hair and clothing for one night. Pennyroyal is also said to bring Tranquility to the Home, to Help Solve Marital Problems, and to bring Good Luck in Family Matters. For this reason it is an ingredient in Peaceful Home Oil. Some burn dried Pennyroyal LEAVES as a clearing incense in the home, along with Blue Candles, or they keep a bowl of the herb on their home altar at all times.
