Undoing Your Own Work: How to Reverse, Neutralize, or Release a Spell You Cast

If this is your first time performing a spell that you really didn’t want to do, or the results have been a little bit unexpected, you’re not by yourself. We have all done this, so don’t feel that bad.

In this article, we’re going to cross the spectrum when it comes to reversal work. I will share with you

There comes a moment in every practitioner’s path when a spell you set in motion no longer serves. Sometimes the results arrive too strongly. Sometimes new information changes the desirability of the outcome. Sometimes you simply outgrow the intention.

Reversing your own magick is not failure. It is an assertion of continued authority over the current you once directed.

The same will that launched the spell can also call it back, freeze it, or redirect it.

MOST OF THE TIME.….. But we’ll get into that in a little more detail later.

Let’s make the assumption the spell that you have cast was the basic witchcraft or folk magick spell.

When reversal is straightforward vs. when it is not

Simple candle, paper, or spoken spells with no offerings are usually easy to neutralize.
Spells involving blood, sexual energy, or formal pacts with spirits require negotiation or substitution rather than simple cancellation.
Workings that have already fully manifested into physical events cannot be “rewound,” but their ongoing energetic momentum can still be halted or redirected.
Repeat castings or layered spells often need the same number of reversal actions as original castings.

Primary methods (ordered from lightest to heaviest)

Most reversals will be able to be reversed and performed by yourself.

MY TIP: we always recommend you perform any spell multiple times.

If you’re not getting the result you want, then take it to the next level and perhaps look at the correspondence of the reversal. Perhaps for you it’s better performed during a certain hour or a certain day, or with a different type of energy or frequency. The key is that you should take notes so you know what works, and next time you’ll know what to do straight away.

Simple releasing chant (for self or target) Best under a waning moon, Saturday, or after sunset.

Light a single white or black tea light. Speak clearly three times:

By the will that set this current flowing, I now withdraw my claim upon it. The spell is finished. Its purpose is complete. I release all parties and all outcomes. So it is done.

Burn the paper (if any) or simply extinguish the candle with intention. Feel the energetic cord snap.
Physical neutralization (freezer or burial method) Gather any remaining materials from the original working if they still exist. Place them in a sealed bag with a written statement: “This working is ended. Its power is frozen / returned to the earth.” Freeze for nine nights or bury at a crossroads or under a tree with the same declaration.

If no materials remain, write a full description of the original spell on paper, fold it away from you, and treat the paper as the proxy.
Candle reversal ritual (classic witchcraft style) Materials: one black candle, one white candle (or gold and silver if working with deity), rosemary or rue oil, a small square of black cloth, a bead or personal item you are willing to release.

Anoint the black candle from base to tip (sending the energy away). Light both candles. Speak:

What I once set in motion I now call to stillness. The current returns to its source. No further power, no further reach. By my will, this working is concluded.

Place the bead and a pinch of herb on the black cloth. Tie three knots while saying:

I enclose the remnants of this spell within darkness. Its force is bound and rendered inert.

Seal with wax. Dispose of the packet in running water or far from your home. Allow the candles to burn out or snuff them decisively.
Visualization + black candle “stop” working For experienced practitioners. Light a black candle. Hold a clear mental image of the original spell as a structure or living current. Watch it unravel, dissolve into mist, or collapse into ash. Speak the specific name or description of the spell and declare it ended. Snap the candle in half when finished and dispose of the pieces.
Cord-cutting variation Especially useful for binding or attachment spells. Visualize or physically cut cords between yourself and the target (or between the spell and its object). State:

The ties I forged are severed. Both are free. The working is complete.

Spirit-assisted or demonic work

WITH SPELLS: If the original spell involved a spirit or demon and an offering was accepted, pure cancellation may not be possible or wise.

A spirit or demon is an independent intelligence with its own will, agenda, and sense of reciprocity. Once a genuine energetic link has been formed & especially through blood, sexual energy, a written and signed agreement, or repeated offerings, the original exchange is often viewed by the spirit as complete and binding.

With spell casting, some of the spells I have cast have taken six months or more of consistent workings to get any level of reversing to happen, and even that sometimes does not work as expected .

When it comes to other contracts, this is where it gets really tricky. Many practitioners treat pacts like online orders that can be cancelled; the spirits themselves rarely do.

And so I’m glad I have experimented in the past and have learnt many lessons on my journey when it comes to spell working as to what I do and won’t do, as I know the difficulty it can be to reverse something I’ve perhaps decided against.”

On PACTS: Black Witch Coven’s own long-standing position is unambiguous: a demonic pact is frequently a lifetime agreement whether the human later wants it or not.

Factors that lock the current more tightly include:

Blood as a sealing agent (life-force and identity carried in the offering).
Explicit soul-language or “until death” wording in the original agreement.
A spirit that has come to enjoy or benefit from the ongoing connection.
Unfulfilled or only partially fulfilled terms on the human side (the spirit may feel the debt is still open).
Weakened personal energy or aura at the time of the original working or now (the link can become parasitic).

There is no universal “off switch.” Some spirits will negotiate; others will simply refuse.

Attempting to force a cancellation without proper protocol can produce backlash, energy drain, or intensified interference.

That’s not to say you shouldn’t try the reversal, we teach that you should at least give it a go by yourself and see how far you can get on your own. if you’re big enough to make a decision and cast a spell, and then also make the decision you don’t want it anymore, you should also make the decision to try and get out of it by yourself first

Step One: Honest Assessment Before You Touch Anything

Before any ritual, answer these questions with complete honesty (write them down):

Which specific spirit or demon was involved?
Was a written pact or contract created? Does a copy still exist?
Was blood, sexual energy, or a major personal concern offered?
Were ongoing duties, offerings, or recognition promised?
Has the original request been fulfilled, partially fulfilled, or not at all?
What side-effects are you currently experiencing (drain, oppression, unusual events, health changes)?
Are you currently strong enough to hold a formal summoning without becoming more vulnerable?

If the answers reveal a formal blood pact or strong ongoing attachment, self-work becomes higher risk.

Many practitioners at this stage are better served by a professional intermediary who can present the case from a position of greater authority and experience.

Self-Attempt Protocol: Respectful Petition and Formal Dissolution

If you decide to try yourself, treat the working with the same seriousness as the original pact.

Preparation

Perform a thorough personal and space cleansing first.
Rebuild basic protective forcefields if they feel thin.
Choose timing that matches the spirit’s traditional associations if known (planetary day/hour, lunar phase, etc.).
Gather: the original contract or a written proxy describing the pact in detail; a suitable offering (something the spirit values—often better quality or larger than the original); black and/or white candles; a blade or cord for symbolic severing; your usual tools of contact.

The Working Itself

Open the space and call the spirit by the name and titles used in the original working. Acknowledge the existing agreement without apology or demand.
State the situation clearly and without emotional pleading. Example structure: “I acknowledge the pact made between us on [date or description]. The work requested has [been completed / reached its limit / no longer serves the original purpose]. I now request that this agreement be concluded. All obligations on both sides are released. I offer [specific alternative offering] as full and final settlement. The link between us is closed. Go your way as I go mine.”
Present the alternative offering and destroy or retire the original contract (burn it in a fire-safe vessel while stating that the pact ends with its destruction).
Perform a deliberate energetic severing: visualise the specific current of that pact as a cord or channel, then cut, dissolve, or withdraw it. Speak a final release.
Close with banishing and grounding. Leave the offerings for the traditional period associated with the spirit, then dispose of them cleanly (running water, crossroads, or burial according to your tradition).

This protocol draws from the practical dissolution methods already outlined on our Black Witch Coven site (clear verbal release, destruction of charged materials, final offering as settlement, energetic severing) and from classical left-hand-path approaches that emphasise respect rather than confrontation.

When the Spirit Refuses or the Link Persists

Refusal is possible and must be accepted as data, not personal failure. In that case the goals shift:

Containment / Freeze: Place the current “on ice.” A sealed freezer working, a bound packet, or a formal statement that no further action is authorised can stop additional manifestation even if the original link remains.
Redirection: Petition the same spirit (or a higher authority within its hierarchy if known) to turn the remaining current toward a neutral or mutually acceptable end rather than the original target.
Personal Severing and Protection: Even if the spirit will not release the agreement, you can still cut residual cords from your own side, reinforce your boundaries, and stop feeding the link with attention or energy.
Professional Intervention: At this point the service offered on the site—summoning the specific demon, presenting the case, and offering an alternative settlement—becomes the more realistic path. The published terms are deliberately honest: two hours of focused work, no guarantee of acceptance, and clear warnings about the nature of demonic agreements. That honesty is itself a form of protection for the client.

Aftercare Is Non-Negotiable

Whether the spirit agrees or not:

Perform layered cleansing (aura, chakras, space) for several days to weeks.
Monitor for residual drain, dreams, omens, or interference.
Avoid further spirit contact until your personal forcefields are solid again.
If health or daily function is affected, address those layers separately before attempting more magick.

THE SPELL CASTER DID IT!

This is a very common real-world situation in folk magic and witchcraft practice.

Someone (you) hired a worker to run a series of candles or another folk-style working against a target. The candles have already been lit, dressed, and set in motion. You did not perform the physical work yourself, so you have none of the stubs, petition papers, or leftover materials. Now you want the work stopped or reversed.

Because the original energy was set by another practitioner’s will + their methods + any spirits they called, pure cancellation is rarely as clean as reversing a spell you cast with your own hands.

Still, there are practical, traditional approaches that work well in this exact scenario.

1. Best First Step: Contact the Original Worker

If the person or service is still reachable and willing, this is the cleanest route.

Ask them directly to reverse or halt the series. Many legitimate folk and witchcraft workers will do this ( for an additional fee). Provide them with any details they need: the target’s name, the dates the candles were burned, and a clear statement that you now withdraw your request and release the intention.

If they agree and perform a proper reversal or “stop” working on their end, the current is usually much easier to settle. If they refuse, disappear, or claim it cannot be undone, move to self-directed methods.

2. Formal Release of Your Own Intention (Essential)

Even though you did not light the candles, your will commissioned and paid for the work. That intention is still part of the energetic current.

Write a clear petition on plain paper:

“I, [your full name], originally requested and paid for candle work / spell work against [target’s full name].

I now fully withdraw that request.

I release all intention, energy, and authority I gave to that working.

The series is ended.

No further action is authorised by me.

So it is done.”

Speak it aloud three times with conviction, then burn the paper and scatter or dispose of the ashes away from your home (running water or a crossroads is traditional). This severs your link to the job even if the original candles have already finished burning.

3. Freezer / Ice-Box Method to Halt Ongoing Effects

This is one of the most effective folk techniques when you do not have the original materials and the work may still be active or residual.

Materials

Small piece of paper with the target’s full name (and, if known, a brief description of the original candle series)
Optional: a pinch of salt, black pepper, or alum
Zip-lock bag or small jar
Freezer

Method

Write the name and a short statement such as:

“All remaining force of the candle work set against [name] is frozen.

No further action.

The current is stopped.”

Fold the paper away from you, place it in the bag or jar with a pinch of salt or pepper, seal it, and put it in the freezer. Leave it there. As long as it stays frozen, the remaining momentum of the original series is held still.

This does not erase what has already manifested, but it is excellent at preventing further movement of the energy.

4. Neutralising / Reversing Candle Work You Can Perform Yourself

If you want a more active counter:

Use a white candle (or a reversing / double-action red-and-black candle if you work in that tradition).
Dress it with uncrossing, reversing, or peace oil, working the oil from the middle outward or from base to tip depending on your method (sending the energy away).
Carve or write a short petition: “The candle series set against [target] is neutralised and ended. All remaining force is released and returned to stillness.”
Burn the candle while focusing on the original work dissolving or going quiet.
Dispose of the remnants at a crossroads or in running water.

Some practitioners also burn a black candle on top of a mirror with the statement that any remaining force of the original job is reflected back into inertia rather than continuing toward the target.

5. If Spirits Were Involved by the Original Caster

If you know (or strongly suspect) the hired worker called spirits, ancestors, or other entities to empower the candles, treat it with the same caution as a spirit-assisted working you performed yourself. A simple candle counter may not be enough. In those cases you may need to:

Perform a respectful petition and settlement offering to the same current, asking that the original job be concluded.
Or seek professional assistance from someone experienced in negotiating with the relevant spirits.

Realistic Expectations

Work that has already fully burned out and produced results cannot be “rewound.” You can only stop further action and release residual energy.
The stronger and more thorough the original series, the more persistence your counter-work may require.
If the target has already been heavily affected, uncrossing and protection work on their side (if you still care about that) is separate from stopping the current you commissioned.

Aftercare

Once you have performed the release, freezer work, and/or neutralising candles:

Cleanse yourself and your space thoroughly.
Monitor the situation for one to two lunar cycles.
Do not keep checking or emotionally feeding the original intention — that can keep the current alive.

This combination: formal release of your own will + freezer to stop residual movement + neutralising candle work, is the practical folk-magic approach most workers use when a client wants a hired candle series stopped after the fact.

…….yes — we can attempt to reverse or stop work if a client changes their mind. We understand that people sometimes rethink things after the fact. That said, before anyone purchases a spell from us, they have to agree that this is genuinely what they want. We always tell clients to take their time and really sit with the decision, because reversing work is difficult and it is expensive.

Everything we do takes real time and energy out of our own schedule, which is why we charge for our services — including reversal work. If you change your mind later, that is entirely your prerogative, but it still requires our time and focus, so there is a charge for that. And if a reversal ends up needing more than one attempt, do the math & the costs add up quickly.

This is especially important with demonic work and certain types of black magic. Once that particular cat is out of the bag, there is no guarantee it can be reversed at all. That covers everything from formal demonic pacts to heavier black magic spell casting. People sometimes get frustrated and expect us to simply undo it, but the reality is that we can petition, we can request, we can present the case and offer alternatives, but we cannot control a demon. No one can. That needs to be understood clearly before anyone steps into that kind of work.
