This week I want to talk about using a pendulum to ask spirits the questions you have been struggling to get answered through traditional evocation.

A lot of people come to this after they have already tried the more impressive looking methods. You may have sat with a scrying mirror. You may have gone the ceremonial route. You may have used my foil magic method and still felt stuck. The presence arrives, the room changes, and you still cannot understand anything being said. That is a communication barrier, and it is more common than people admit. I know it from the inside, because I think with my head too much and I do not drop into my heart. I am analytical. I talk over the connection. So I burn incense, I light candles, and I work in a darkened room, not because the demon requires a theatre set, but because I require a calm body before I can hear anything.

Pendulums look simple, and they are simple, and they still ask for practice. A strong mind is useful in magic until it starts steering the tool. If you already know what you want the answer to be, you can sway the pendulum without noticing, especially in the first few sessions. Do not take those early readings as gospel. Put a journal next to you and write the question in the same words you spoke, then write the movement you got. People skip this and then wonder why they distrust themselves.

Here is why the journal matters. You will get answers you do not like. You will get answers that sound too far fetched to be useful. You will ask a follow up, get another piece, and if none of it is on paper you will only remember the discomfort. Weeks later, when the first reply turns out to have been accurate, you will have no record, only the old feeling that you are bad at divination. That is usually the moment people put the pendulum in a drawer. The opposite happens when you have the page in front of you. The unlikely answer lands in real life, you look back at your own handwriting, and you think, all right, the connection is there. Confidence comes from that, not from buying a prettier stone.

You do not need a shop pendulum. You can make one from a small crystal, a pendant, a ring, or another light object on a necklace chain, a string, or a ribbon. Once you have made it for divination, let it be a divination tool. Do not treat it as everyday jewelry and then expect a clean signal when you sit down to ask a serious question.

Hold the strand in your fingertips and let the weight hang still before you speak. If you are inexperienced, take a minute to settle. Some people call that a light trance. You can call it shutting up. Then start with yes or no questions you already know the answer to, because you are teaching yourself what yes and no look like on this tool, with your hand, on this day.

Ask something that has to be yes. Do I practice witchcraft. Wait for a clear swing and decide that this motion is yes. Ground it. Then ask something that has to be no. Am I a cat. Side to side is no for me. Then ask something slightly stupid that a spirit may refuse, so you can learn what “no comment” looks like. Will there be a media storm tonight at eleven. Mine barely moved. That blankness is part of the vocabulary. If you only know yes and no, you will force a third kind of answer into one of those two boxes and then blame the demon.

Getting yourself into a working state is personal. Blonde Gypsy drinks certain teas to do what she calls lifting her lid, and once that lid is up she connects more easily to source energy. Her tarot, her moon cards, and her pendulum all come through stronger after that. You may need candles, incense, darkness, silence, or tea. Try more than one method and keep the one that actually quiets your analysis, because that is the real obstacle for a lot of us.

If the pendulum is for a specific spirit or demon, put that spirit on the table. A printed seal, a sigil, or a talisman tells the room who you are addressing and gives the current somewhere to sit. Astaroth is a good spirit for this kind of questioning. Astaroth likes to pass on wisdom and knowledge, and that makes this a strong ally if you are in this work and you want answers rather than atmosphere. Set the seal down and work the pendulum over it. If you have been through the working with demons class, you already know how we consecrate foil and use it as a sigil. That consecrated foil can sit under the pendulum in the same way. The spirit connects to the seal. The pendulum makes the reply visible.

This is where the method becomes practical instead of mystical for its own sake. You can ask the spirit which candles, which incense, and which small arrangements make your space feel like somewhere they will stay. Ask one thing at a time. Do you like red candles. Do you like purple candles. Do not bundle two colors into one sentence and then argue with the swing. You are furnishing a temple. When the objects and the scents suit the spirit, the connection gets easier, and the pendulum is how you stop decorating from guesswork.

Write it down. Practice when your head is quiet. Let the first strange answers sit in the journal instead of in your self doubt. That is how this tool becomes a conversation rather than a toy you tried once.
