Voodoo Doll Love Spell: How to Make and Use a Love Poppet

By Team B.W.C.

A doll used in magic is usually better understood as a poppet or magical effigy: a physical figure created to represent a particular person, intention, or relationship.

The older version of this article calls the working a “Voodoo doll” spell. That wording is common in popular occult writing, but it can blur together very different traditions. Haitian Vodou and other Afro-diasporic religions have their own histories, spirits, rites, and practices. A homemade poppet used in a love working should not automatically be presented as representative of Vodou itself.

For this working, the doll is used as a symbolic representation of the relationship you want to develop. The focus is on attraction, connection, and romantic attention, rather than assuming a doll can automatically force another person’s feelings.

What You’ll Need

  • Wax, clay, or fabric for the doll
  • A small amount of material that represents you
  • A small personal concern connected to the person you are working toward, if you already have one and it was obtained appropriately
  • Red, black, and white ribbon or thread
  • Paper
  • Red pen or marker
  • One white or red candle
  • A heat-safe surface if you are working with wax or flame

You do not need to make the doll perfectly. It should be recognizable to you as the person or relationship it represents.

Before You Begin: Decide What You Are Actually Trying to Do

This matters more than the materials.

There is a difference between:

“I want to attract a loving relationship with this person if there is genuine potential between us.”

and

“I want to completely control this person’s thoughts and emotions.”

The first gives you a clear magical objective without pretending that another person’s free will can be guaranteed. The second turns the working into an attempt to dictate someone else’s behavior.

Be honest with yourself about which one you actually want.

If your goal is reconciliation, attraction, increased communication, commitment, or simply bringing a compatible partner toward you, state that specifically before making the doll.

How to Make the Love Poppet

1. Make the figure

Create a small figure from wax, clay, or fabric.

As you work, keep the intended purpose in mind. You can shape the doll to represent the person you are trying to attract, or create two figures if your working is specifically about the relationship between two people.

A handmade figure gives you more opportunity to build your intention into the object than simply picking up a finished decoration.

2. Add identifying material

If you have a personal concern associated with yourself, such as a strand of your own hair or a small piece of clothing, you can incorporate it into the figure.

If you are using something associated with another person, only use material you have obtained without trespassing, stealing, or otherwise violating their privacy.

The purpose of a personal concern in this kind of magic is identification. It gives the working a more specific connection to the person or relationship rather than leaving the doll as a completely generic symbol.

You do not need bodily fluids to make a poppet work. The original article makes strong claims about fluids, hair, and nail clippings, but those claims are presented as fact without explaining the tradition behind them.

3. Mark the doll

Write the person’s name on the doll or on a small piece of paper that will remain with it.

You can also write your own name alongside theirs if the purpose is specifically to develop a mutual relationship.

This gives the doll a clear identity and prevents your intention from becoming vague.

4. Prepare the ribbons

Use red, black, and white ribbon or thread.

Each color can represent a different part of your intention. For example, red can represent attraction and passion, white can represent clarity or sincerity, and black can represent protection, boundaries, or the removal of obstacles.

These associations are not universal rules. Use the symbolism that actually makes sense within your practice.

5. Bind the intention

Wrap the ribbons around the doll one at a time.

As you tie each ribbon, focus on the specific quality you want to strengthen: attraction, communication, affection, commitment, or another clearly defined goal.

The older article uses the short line:

“Ribbons bind and entwine / Your heart, linked to mine”

The useful part of this wording is the symbolism: the ribbons physically connect the two ideas you are trying to bring together. You can use these words if they fit your practice, or replace them with your own direct statement.

Don’t turn the ritual into a long speech. A short, specific intention is enough.

The Love Spell

6. Place the name beneath the doll

Write the person’s name on a piece of paper and place it beneath the doll.

If your intention is for a relationship between the two of you, write both names and clearly state what you want that connection to become.

For example:

“May mutual attraction, affection, and honest communication grow between us.”

The wording matters because you are defining the kind of relationship you are asking the magic to encourage.

7. Light the candle

Place the doll on a safe, heat-resistant surface and light the candle.

Spend some time focusing on the relationship you want to develop.

Rather than imagining that you are commanding someone to fall in love, visualize the qualities you actually want to experience: mutual attraction, affection, communication, physical closeness, trust, or commitment.

This keeps the working focused on a recognizable outcome rather than an unrealistic promise of total control.

8. Work with the doll

Hold the doll in your hands for a few moments.

Picture the relationship moving toward the outcome you have chosen. You can speak your intention aloud or repeat it silently.

If you are working toward reconciliation, focus on renewed communication and openness.

If you are seeking a new relationship, focus on attraction and the opportunity for a genuine romantic connection.

If you are already involved with someone and want to strengthen the relationship, focus on the qualities you want to grow between you.

9. Close the working

When you are finished, extinguish the candle safely.

Keep the doll somewhere private and undisturbed if you intend for the working to continue over time.

You do not need to constantly manipulate the doll or repeat the ritual every night. Give the working a clear beginning and ending, then pay attention to what happens in the real relationship.

Why That Order?

The order moves from representation → identification → intention → activation.

First, you create the physical representation. Then you identify exactly who or what the doll represents. The ribbons and written names give the working more specific symbolism, while the candle provides a clear point at which you concentrate on the desired outcome.

The most important part comes before the candle is even lit: knowing what you actually want.

If your intention is simply “make this person love me,” you have not really defined the result. A stronger working identifies the type of relationship you want—attraction, reconciliation, communication, commitment, passion, or something else.

What About Using a Personal Concern?

Personal concerns are commonly used in forms of sympathetic and folk magic because they create a symbolic link between the magical object and a particular person.

Hair, clothing, handwriting, photographs, and other personal items can serve this purpose in different traditions.

You do not need to collect intimate bodily material to make this work meaningful. In fact, the old article’s suggestion that body fluids are inherently more powerful is too absolute. Different magical traditions assign different importance to different materials, and there is no universal ranking that applies to every practitioner.

If you do use a personal concern, treat another person’s belongings and bodily material with appropriate boundaries.

When to Work the Spell

The original article does not give a detailed magical timing system, but you can incorporate lunar timing if that is already part of your practice.

For drawing and increasing attraction, some practitioners prefer the waxing Moon because it symbolizes growth and increase.

For reconciliation or repairing an existing relationship, choose timing based on the specific purpose rather than automatically assuming one lunar phase is appropriate.

The timing is there to reinforce your intention—not to replace it.

Keep the Doll Afterward

If you want the working to remain active as an ongoing symbol, keep the doll somewhere private.

You can periodically hold it while revisiting your intention, particularly if your goal is to strengthen an existing relationship.

If the relationship develops naturally, you can decide whether the doll should remain part of your practice or whether the working has reached its conclusion.

If you decide you are finished with the spell, dismantle or dispose of the doll according to your own magical tradition.

A Note About Love Magic and Control

Love magic gets complicated when the goal becomes absolute control over another person.

A spell can be used as a way to focus your own desire, encourage attraction, strengthen your confidence, or symbolically work toward a relationship. What it cannot honestly promise is that another person will automatically develop genuine feelings simply because a ritual was performed.

That distinction is worth keeping in the article because it makes the practice more useful, not less.

If you are trying to bring someone back, attract someone new, improve communication, or strengthen an existing relationship, be specific about the outcome you want. Then let the magical working support the practical choices you make outside the ritual.

The doll is the magical representation. Your intention gives it direction. The real-world relationship is where the result ultimately has to exist.

I have performed a spell to return my ex. Though he is back in the picture and seems to be desirous of spending more time with me, I still sense a wall in his heart…he is hesitant to let me back in all the way, I can feel this…do you have any suggestions on what I can do to make him let his guard down with me all the way so we can truly fall in love again? Thanks!

Hi Ash, I can advise you for sure. Can you tell me if you gf has left the country, or has another person. This will all matter in the spell casting preparation. BWS
