Where Luciferianism Comes From

There is no single Luciferian church stretching from the morning star to now. What you have are separate uses of a name, some holy, some accused, some literary, some lived.

The name before a tradition

Lucifer is Latin for light-bearer. It named the morning star. In scripture the same dawn-light can be a taunt at a fallen king, and elsewhere a title of brightness.

The first people called Luciferians

In the fourth century, followers of Lucifer of Cagliari, a Sardinian bishop, were nicknamed Luciferians. They were strict Nicene Christians. They were not a cult of the Devil.

The accusation

From the Middle Ages on, Luciferian often meant a charge: people said to mourn Lucifer’s fall and want him restored. Inquisitors used it. Folklore used it. That file tells you what authorities feared.

The first modern self-name

In 1906 Carl William Hansen of Copenhagen, writing as Ben Kadosh, put Luciferian on himself and printed Lucifer as the Ego of living matter, one with Pan and with Hiram the builder. Small book. Small circle. Later people point at him as an ancestor. His tradition is fringe Masonry and a cult of that force.

Angelic and planetary work

In England, Madeline Montalban built a school around Lumiel, Light of God, the earth-angel and first intellect. Students learned the sky first. Lucifer sat at the center of a private lesson, not on a newsstand. That is a real tradition of practice: prayer, hours, angels, a living bond with the Light-Bringer under another form of the name.

What these traditions share, and what they do not

They share a refusal to let Lucifer mean only the pulpit’s Devil. Some mean a star. Some mean mind. Some mean a spirit you pray to. Some mean a force in matter. Some mean an accusation they never chose.

Occultists take the lamp

Helena Blavatsky named her London magazine Lucifer in 1887 on purpose. She wanted the morning star as bringer of hidden light, and she knew the shock would do work. Theosophy did not found Luciferianism as a religion, but it taught a generation that the name could be cleaned and used.

Charles Leland’s Aradia (1899) put Lucifer in a witch gospel as a shining god beside Diana. How much of that is Tuscan folklore and how much is Leland is still fought over. Witches have used it anyway.

In 1906 the Dane Carl William Hansen, writing as Ben Kadosh, published a Lucifer-Hiram text and put Luciferian on a census. Academic surveys often treat him as one of the first people to wear the word in public as a self-name.

Germany’s Fraternitas Saturni, from the 1920s, worked a Luciferian principle inside a Saturnian magical order. They are part of the occult soil, not a single founder.

In mid-century England, Madeline Montalban’s Order of the Morning Star taught an astrological, ceremonial Luciferianism. Later British traditional witchcraft, especially through writers like Michael Howard, read Lucifer into craft lineages. Robert Cochrane’s Clan of Tubal Cain is claimed by some heirs as Luciferian and Gnostic. Other readers call that a later overlay. The argument itself tells you the word was still being fitted onto older witchcraft in the late twentieth century.

The Process Church, in the 1960s, used Luciferian as one of its official identities beside Jehovah and Satan. That is another modern experiment, not a medieval survival.

The current you will actually meet

What most websites mean by Luciferianism took shape after the mid-twentieth century, in the same weather as modern Satanism, but not as a mere copy of Anton LaVey.

LaVey’s Church of Satan (1966) made Satan a public religion of the self. Many Luciferians then said: we are not that. We want the light-bringer, knowledge, and a more spiritual ascent. The split is real in rhetoric even when the practices share tools.

Michael W. Ford’s Luciferian witchcraft, the Order of Phosphorus, and the Greater Church of Lucifer (later the Assembly of Light Bearers) are the most visible American stream: philosophy plus ritual, Adversary as mask and as spirit, often with Lilith and a long list of older gods. The Houston storefront church in 2015 was a public bump, not the origin of the current.

Nightside and Qliphothic Luciferianism is another late layer. It maps Lucifer onto the leftover Tree of Life, usually at Thaumiel, with Lilith as the gate. That is twentieth- and twenty-first-century occult Qabalah, not Solomon’s court.

Anti-cosmic and chaos-gnostic groups took a harder line: the world itself is the prison. They sometimes use Luciferian language. They are a minority edge, not the parent of the rest.

Different Luciferians, same name

Luciferianism is not one practice with a single manual. People who honestly use the word can stand in very different rooms.

Michael Ford builds a Luciferian philosophy first. Lucifer is the Light-Bringer and the Adversary: intellect, rebellion, the flame you are supposed to grow. Other gods and demons get read as masks of that same current. You can take it as a stance for living, as theistic magick, or as both. The aim is liberation, illumination, and becoming your own governing mind.

Asenath Mason walks a Nightside tree. Lucifer belongs with the Qliphoth, usually at the split crown, Thaumiel. You do not start there. You start at Lilith, one leftover realm at a time. The work is Draconian and Qliphothic: the husk is a climate you enter, not a slogan.

Other Luciferians do it still another way. Some never light a candle and keep Lucifer as a name for reason and pride. Some keep a simple theistic devotion and no tree at all. Some come through British craft, the morning star, and the sabbat. Some go anti-cosmic and treat the world itself as the prison. They are not doing Ford’s program or Mason’s gates. They still mean the morning star, knowledge, and a life that is not rented from someone else’s pulpit.

Here at Black Witch Coven we are Luciferian, and we do it a little differently from all of that.

Lucifer is not only a current in the self, and he is not only the last king on a dark tree. In this house he is the first spirit under whatever ultimate godhood stands above the whole arrangement. He is chief of the court. Pathworking is how we go to him. We are not climbing the Qliphoth as our main road.

That is enough for this page. In the coming weeks and months we will unpack that court, how we pathwork, and how a student actually meets him here. Until then, read Ford if you want the Adversary as a path of becoming. Read Mason if you want the Nightside tree. Stay with us if you want the coven’s way: Lucifer as the one who runs the house.

It is my personal belief, Lucifer is millions of years old. He is not from this light system. As we do not have documented evidence before the modern transcribing of events, we must rely solely on artefacts seen on cave walls, or in pyramids. Other than that, Lucifer does provide an insight into his origins to some believers, and we understand this is subjective at best.

It’s been many years now since Lucifer shared His true image and origins with myself, and a small room of non-Luciferian “light workers”, through a method of hypnotherapy, where the light workers are able to see and feel my journey. The language in which Lucifer spoke was so ancient, the guides guide, required assistance to translate the information provided to us all.

There is no doubt that Lucifer has a reptilian form, and hails from a planet far from our current solar system. The landscape almost appears as a series of gigantic geode caves. All communication is telepathic.

As a Luciferian, we pay no attention to the teachings of the Abrahamic religions. However I do believe, Lucifer could have appeared before “Eve & Lilith” at a time in history, to share knowledge…to free them from the bondage of ignorance. Perhaps this is why we see Lucifer coming into the writings of the Bible as the adversary, who attempts to take people away from the word of the Abrahamic God. We all know that the winners write the history books, and as individuals had no choice other than to follow the teachings of Christ in those times, those who had opposing beliefs followed Lucifer and the Pagan Gods in secret for over two centuries.
