Also known as Samigina, Gamigin is the fourth demon of the 72 demons ensnared by King Solomon and bound to a brass vessel in antiquity – he is mentioned as the fourth demon within the Ars Goetia. Like other Goetia demons, Gamigin became a Fallen Angel after rebelling against the Order of the Angels and being cast out of heaven.

His rank is that of a Great Marquis of hell and he is a day demon. He belongs to the First Order of Demons and is thus potent. Gamigin is the forty-sixth demon mentioned within the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum. Gamigin has thirty legions of lesser demons working under his command.

Gamigin is also mentioned within other grimories such as the Discoverie of Withcraft, the Dictionnaire Infernal, and the Book of Incantations. He is able to teach all manner of the liberal arts in addition to giving accounts of souls that died in sin. He is particularly opposed by the “Shemhamphorasch” angel Ieuiah.

History

There are no discernible associations within ancient Middle-Eastern mythology with Gamigin. Like the other Fallen Angels however, he was probably a popular pagan god who was demonized and his name subsequently Latinized with the advent of Judeo-Christian based religions.

The Ars Goetia states the following about Gamigin:

“SAMIGINA, or GAMIGIN. – The Fourth Spirit is Samigina, a Great Marquis. He appeareth in the form of a little Horse or Ass, and then into Human shape doth he change himself at the request of the Master. He speaketh with a hoarse voice. He ruleth over 30 Legions of Inferiors. He teaches all Liberal Sciences, and giveth account of Dead Souls that died in sin. And his Seal is this, which is to be worn before the Magician when he is Invocator, etc. “
