The traditional framework treats him as male.

The feminine reading is almost entirely a modern development. It did not come from a newly discovered manuscript. It arose from lived experience inside contemporary practice, particularly within demonolatry and independent spirit work from the late twentieth century onward. A noticeable number of practitioners reported that the presence they encountered felt refined, composed, elegant, or maternal rather than classically masculine. Some described a courtly or aristocratic feminine quality. Others simply found that “Duchess” or “Lady” fit the current they were meeting more accurately than “Duke.” Over time these personal reports accumulated, were shared, and began to circulate as a legitimate alternative way of relating.

There have also been speculative attempts to push the origin further back. A few modern writers have linked the name Bune to Buto (an epithet associated with the Egyptian cobra goddess Wadjet, sometimes connected with Isis). These suggestions remain unproven. They are interesting as modern myth-making, but they are not supported by the historical grimoire trail. The Bune of the texts is a product of the late medieval and early modern European spirit catalogues.

What matters for practical work is that both ways of addressing him now exist side by side without much conflict.

Some practitioners stay with the traditional masculine language and title out of respect for the source material. Others follow the gender that matches their direct experience.

A third group stops worrying about the pronoun altogether and simply works with the intelligence that answers. Across these approaches the reported results (wealth, clearer speech, better conditions, steady relationship) do not appear to depend on which grammatical gender the practitioner prefers.

Colours

Orange is also common; it sits between the solar gold and the more active, stimulating side of attraction and opportunity. Green enters the picture through the link with growth, increase, and the Venusian or natural side of abundance. Some practitioners add black when the necromantic or underworld aspect is being emphasised, treating it as the colour of the grave, the threshold, and the gathering of spirits.

None of these is mandatory. A single candle in a colour that feels appropriate for the request is enough to begin. Over time, many people notice which colours seem to produce cleaner or stronger responses for them and refine from there.

Copper appears in some systems because of the traditional association of Dukes with Venus, and because copper is the metal of that planet. Practitioners who emphasise the Venusian or relational side of Bune sometimes prefer it. Both metals have logic behind them. Gold tends to dominate in prosperity-focused work; copper shows up more when the emphasis is on attraction, harmony, or the softer edge of influence. Again, it is better to begin with what you have than to delay until the “correct” metal is obtained.

Offerings

Coins and metal

Coins (especially gold-coloured, copper, or actual silver and gold when available) are straightforward. They speak the language of wealth directly. Some people keep a small dish of coins on the altar and add to it over time. Others offer a single coin with intention and later dispose of it respectfully or leave it in a place connected to movement and exchange.

Food and drink

Good quality chocolate, honey, dates, oranges, and other rich or sweet foods appear often. These are offerings of pleasure and substance. The act of sharing something enjoyable (eating a portion while leaving a portion, or simply presenting something you yourself find desirable) is treated by many as a way of letting the spirit participate in ordinary sensory experience. Wine, rum, and darker spirits are also common. Some prefer red wine for its richness; others use rum because it has become traditional in a number of modern Goetic and folk-influenced practices.

Incense

Sandalwood is the most frequently recommended. It has a long association with refined spiritual contact and is widely available. Oud (agarwood) is valued for its depth and costliness; offering something expensive is itself a gesture. Frankincense and cedar appear as alternatives or additions, especially when people want a cleaner or more elevating smoke.

Scent and luxury

Perfume, essential oils, or other fine scents are used by those who want to offer something beautiful and atmospheric. This fits the reports of a refined or courtly quality in the presence.

Written words

A short letter of thanks, a record of results, or a deliberately written prayer can be placed on the altar or burned. For a spirit who grants eloquence and true answers, words themselves become a fitting offering.

Blood

Some practitioners include a drop of their own blood as a personal seal or intensification of the link. This is not required and should be approached with care and clean technique if used at all.

The underlying principle across these options is sincerity and proportion. An offering that feels meaningful to the practitioner and coherent with the request tends to work better than an expensive item given without attention. Many long-term workers report that Bune responds more to consistency and follow-through than to spectacle. A modest offering made regularly often outweighs a dramatic one made once.

Start with what you can do cleanly. A candle, the enn, the sigil, and one simple offering are enough to open the door. Refinement comes through practice, not through perfect preparation.

The grimoires give a striking visual: a dragon with three heads. One head is like a dog, one like a griffin, and one like a man. He is said to speak with a high and comely voice. That description is the classical one, and some practitioners do encounter a strong draconic or multi-headed presence, especially in deeper visionary or dream states.

In ordinary modern contact the experience is often quieter and more varied than the full three-headed form.

Many people first notice a composed, intelligent presence that feels still rather than chaotic. Some sense a refined or courtly quality. Others describe a heavy, grounded current that settles into the space without drama. A number report the voice (when it comes) as clear, measured, and higher in tone than expected.

Visuals, when they occur, range from the classical dragon to a more human-like figure, sometimes elegant, sometimes simply solid and watchful.

Necromantic ordering and control

This is the main area where the work can take on a heavier character. Bune is described as moving the bodies of the dead and compelling the spirits under his command to gather at graves and sepulchres.

Some practitioners use this office to:

• Compel residual or lingering spirits to assemble or depart from a location
• Enforce order during necromantic operations so that the dead do not become chaotic or intrusive
• Assist in the removal or relocation of problematic dead presence
• Support work involving inheritance disputes, unresolved dead, or ancestral pressure that has become burdensome

In these contexts the current can feel stern, cold, and absolute rather than benevolent.

Grave and threshold work

Related to the above, some operators call Bune when dealing with places strongly marked by death, or when they need a spirit who can move freely across that boundary and impose structure.

This is not theatrical “darkness,” but it is serious and not lightly undertaken. For example, when we are collecting dirt from a graveyard, especially if it is for money workings and we’re collecting the appropriate dirt from the appropriate grave, we might call to Bune for this exact purpose. This could be a tip for you if you’re using Bune for that circumstance and you’re into this tool in your magic.

Wealth through pressure or removal of obstacles

While most people approach Bune for constructive prosperity, a smaller number use him in more forceful financial work: accelerating the removal of people or situations that block resources, or applying pressure so that money moves out of one place and into another.

Historical Origins

For the sake of completion, you might be wondering: where did Bune even come from? Truly, nobody knows; however, this is the published history that we can track through the grimoires.

The Earliest Record

Bune’s written history belongs to the European grimoire tradition. He does not appear under this name in ancient Egyptian, Mesopotamian, or classical sources. The trail begins in the late medieval period.

The earliest known appearance is in the fifteenth-century French text Livre des Esperitz (Book of Spirits). There Bune is listed as the twenty-seventh spirit and is said to command thirty-five legions. He is already described as a duke who grants wisdom, riches, and eloquence, and who answers questions truthfully. The three-headed form is present in this early source, showing that the core image was established before the later printed works.

Weyer and the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum

In 1577 Johann Weyer included Bune in his Pseudomonarchia Daemonum. This entry became the foundation for almost everything that followed. Weyer describes Bune (also rendered Bime or Bimé) as a great and strong duke who appears as a dragon with three heads, the third like a man. He speaks with a high or divine voice, moves the dead, causes spirits to gather upon sepulchres, enriches those who work with him, makes them wise and eloquent, and answers truly. Thirty legions obey him.

Reginald Scot’s English translation of Weyer’s material in The Discoverie of Witchcraft (1584) helped spread this description more widely.

The Ars Goetia

The Ars Goetia, the first book of the Lemegeton or Lesser Key of Solomon, was compiled in the mid-seventeenth century. It places Bune as the twenty-sixth spirit. The account is nearly identical to Weyer’s, with the number of legions fixed at thirty. This is the version most modern practitioners know.

The Mathers and Crowley edition of 1904 locked in the familiar English phrasing that still circulates widely today.

Later Transmission

Collin de Plancy’s Dictionnaire Infernal repeated the same core attributes and helped popularise the visual image of the three-headed dragon. From the nineteenth century onward the description has remained remarkably stable across occult literature.

On Speculative Origins

A few modern writers have suggested possible links between the name Bune and older titles such as Buto, associated with the Egyptian cobra goddess Wadjet. These ideas remain speculative and are not supported by the historical grimoire evidence.
