According to the Grand Grimoire, a rod or wand used by a magician to control spirits, especially unruly ones. “The blasting rod is held to have terrible powers over demons that will cause them to obey the magician.”

The Grand Grimoire describes the blasting rod as a hand wand with forked ends that are capped with magnetized steel. It

. . . causes the spirits to tremble; which God also used to arm his Angel when Adam and Eve were driven out of the Earthly Paradise; wherewith, finally, he smote the rebellious Angels, precipitating their ambitions into the most appalling gulfs by the power of this very Rod—of this Rod which collects the clouds, disperses tempests, averts the lightning, or precipitates each and all upon any portion of the earth at the pleasure of its director.

In conjuring spirits, the magician threatens to smite Lucifer and all his race with the blasting rod, sending them into the bottomless abyss, if the spirit fails to appear in the magic triangle without noise or evil smell and answer the magician’s questions in a clear voice. If the spirit still refuses to appear, the magician is to:

. . . smite all the spirits by plunging the forked extremities of your rod into the flames, and be not alarmed in so doing at the frightful howls which you may hear, for at this extreme moment all the spirits will manifest.

If the spirit still refuses, further threats of smiting with the blasting rod are made, along with increasingly powerful incantations.

What is “blasting”?

In ceremonial magic, blasting is a means of coercing a demon to appear and perform tasks on command. Blasting is done with a magical wand called a blasting rod.

In ceremonial magic, the term blasting refers to a specific type of magical operation or ritual designed to cause harm, disruption, or destruction to a target or to negative influences. It is often used in the context of banishing, protection, or binding, and its intention is to dispel or obliterate something—whether it be a person, situation, spiritual entity, or a particular energy.

Blasting is sometimes considered a form of destructive magic, but in the proper ceremonial context, it is viewed as a defensive or protective measure, particularly when someone is under attack or facing psychic or spiritual harm.

Key Characteristics of Blasting in Ceremonial Magic

  1. Destructive Intent:
    • Blasting is usually invoked with the intention to destroy or disrupt something. This could be a curse, a negative energy, a spiritual attachment, or even an enemy. The purpose is often to weaken or eliminate the target, whether it’s a person, a situation, or a spiritual force.
  2. Ceremonial Rituals:
    • The practice of blasting is often tied to formalized rituals and may involve the use of specific invocations, symbols, chants, tools, and visualizations. These rituals are designed to channel and focus magical energy toward the target.
  3. Use of Deities, Spirits, or Demons:
    • In some systems of magic, spirits, angels, or even demons are invoked for the purpose of blasting. For instance, a magician might call on certain angels for protection or to assist in blasting away a curse, or might call on demons or dark forces for destructive purposes (though this depends on the tradition).
  4. Banishing and Binding:
    • Blasting may overlap with techniques such as banishing (removing unwanted spirits, influences, or energies) or binding (restricting a person’s actions or influence). However, blasting is often seen as more aggressive or forceful in its methods.
  5. Visualization:
    • Powerful visualizations are often used in blasting. The magician may visualize an explosive force or a lightning strike that hits the target, or may picture destructive waves of energy ripping apart obstacles or entities. The goal is to mentally and spiritually “blast” the obstruction out of existence.
  6. The Element of Fire:
    • In many magical traditions, fire is a key element in blasting rituals because it represents destruction, purification, and transmutation. Flames or fiery symbols are often used to symbolize the destructive energy of the blasting ritual.
  7. Kabbalistic and Hermetic Traditions:
    • In some Kabbalistic and Hermetic traditions, blasting can refer to a specific magical technique used to either destroy spiritual blockages or to attack adversaries in a metaphysical sense. The Lesser Banishing Ritual of the Pentagram (LBRP), for example, has elements of blasting in its ability to remove or ward off negative forces.

Potential Uses of Blasting in Ceremonial Magic:

  1. Removal of Blockages:
    • Blasting might be employed to clear obstacles that prevent spiritual, financial, or emotional growth. If someone is experiencing stagnation in their life, a blasting ritual could be used to disrupt those blockages and pave the way for progress.
  2. Protection Against Psychic Attack:
    • If a person feels they are under psychic attack, a blasting ritual can help to send negative energies or spiritual entities away. It’s a form of counterattack, typically intended to dispel the negative influence before it can harm the individual further.
  3. Curses or Warding Off Enemies:
    • Blasting is sometimes associated with the casting of curses or the breaking of curses. A practitioner may use blasting to break the hold of a curse or hex placed on them, or to attack an enemy who is believed to be sending negative energy.
  4. Destruction of Unwanted Entities:
    • In more aggressive magical systems, blasting might be used to expel or destroy negative spirits, demons, or even psychic intrusions that are believed to be interfering with one’s life or spiritual practices.
  5. Breaking Unhealthy Attachments:
    • If someone is under the influence of an unhealthy relationship (e.g., a toxic romantic partner or a parasitic relationship), a blasting ritual may be used to cut the emotional or spiritual ties with that person, releasing the individual from negative or harmful energies.

Ethical Considerations

Blasting, especially when performed with the intention to harm or destroy, is controversial in many magical traditions. Some practitioners believe that such actions may have unintended consequences, including the possibility of the ritual backfiring, causing karma, or creating a cycle of destructive energy that the magician may have to face later on.

Many modern ethical magicians or Wiccans (who follow the Wiccan Rede) may avoid or discourage blasting rituals, particularly when used against others, as they believe that any harm done to others will come back upon the practitioner in some form.

On the other hand, some practitioners of left-hand path traditions or darker magics might consider blasting to be a legitimate form of defense, empowerment, or justice when wielded in the proper circumstances.

Conclusion

In ceremonial magic, blasting is a term used to describe the forceful destruction, disruption, or banishing of negative energies, entities, or influences. It is a form of defensive magic that can be used for protection, removal of blockages, or even for attack in certain contexts. However, due to the aggressive nature of blasting, practitioners should approach it with caution, carefully considering the ethical and spiritual consequences of invoking such destructive forces. As with any form of ceremonial magic, the intent behind the ritual is key to its outcome.

NOTE: In folk MAGIC blasting has a different meaning……it is the power to interfere with or destroy the fertility of man, beast, and crop. According to lore, witches blast as acts of revenge or unprovoked malice. They cause sexual dysfunction, impotency, barrenness, miscarriages, stillbirths, and deformities. Their power to wreak such havoc comes from the devil, who grants it in exchange for service and soul.

The destruction of fertility, growth, and abundance is practiced in SORCERY traditions around the world.
