“Zepar is a Great Duke of Hell. He commands 26 legions of inferior spirits. His office is to cause women to love men, and bring them together in love. He makes women barren. He is depicted with red clothes and armor, like a soldier.”

In my personal deck of cards, I have given Zepar the 2 of Cups because of its association with love and the demon’s major office. However to stay consistent to the Occult Tarot deck, I will give him the Lovers tarot card. As always the goal of this thread is to select one card for daily inspiration and guidance while anticipating that one of our beloved demons will reach out.
The Lovers tarot card belongs to the Major Arcana deck – it is the sixth card within this deck. When it appears upright it is usually interpreted as love, harmony, choices, relationships, or the alignment of values. When it is reversed however it usually means imbalance, self-love, disharmony, or misalignment of values.
The Lovers tarot card shows a naked man and woman standing beside each other. The angel Raphael looks on from above in a manner akin to blessing their union. The couple stands within a lush grassland perhaps implying fertility. There is a tall apple tree behind the woman with a snake coiled around the trunk.
The environment which is evident here is reminiscent of the biblical Garden of Eden. The snake shows the temptations which sensual desires impart on human beings to the point that they veer from the divine. There is a burning tree behind the man showing that his focus is on passion as seen in him gazing towards the woman.
There are twelve flames in the burning tree representing the signs of the zodiac and time. This is a symbol of time and eternity seeing as time is usually measured up to the number twelve. The important role which time plays in the life of any human being is further enhanced by the appearance of the angel Raphael.
The man gazes at the woman who in turn looks upward at the angel Raphael. The implication here is that there is a path leading from physical desires to more spiritual concerns – the human is capable of attending to conscious, subconscious, and superconscious needs. There is a volcanic mountain in the background whose phallic appearance represents the eruption of passion.
The Demon
Zepar is a fallen angel who was summoned and trapped in a brass vessel by King Solomon in the days of antiquity. The demon ranks as a Great Duke within the hellish realm. He is listed as the 16th of the 72 demons within the Ars Goetia. He has dominion over 26 legions of lesser demons that carry out his every command.
As a demon, there is little knowledge regarding the background of Zepar. The demon is however mentioned in major grimoires such as the Dictionnaire Infernal, the Pseudomonarchia Daemonum, and the Ars Goetia. Nevertheless, the information contained within these books regarding Zepar is scant at best.
The offices of this demon involve making women fall in love with men. He is also capable of making women barren if he so desires. Some accounts report that he is able to transform women into more desirable shapes for their lovers. Not much else is known regarding the demon as consistent with the mysterious nature of these spirits.
Zepar usually appears wearing red clothes and bearing arms. He wears armor that is akin to that of a soldier. There is nothing monstrous about his appearance. There are no mentions of whether he is able to abandon this appearance to become less unnerving to the conjurer. There are accounts which state that he has an ambiguous appearance.
Other notable facts regarding this demon are that he is described as being male – it is worth noting that these demons cannot always be conclusively gendered. His placement as being male is therefore important because he is one of the few demons whose gender is known. There are several other demons with androgynous attributes.
Note – there are no mentions of whether this demon is good, bad, or indifferent towards human beings. Perhaps, this is cause for concern for any inexperienced conjurers who may attempt to summon him for pathworking.
The Message
Should I anticipate new beginnings? Is there disharmony in my life?
I believe that Zepar is a demon who can prove very useful to the conjurer. One of the things that people struggle with is love. Therefore, a spirit who is capable of bringing love to a person’s life means that the conjurer has overcome this challenge. He therefore forms a bridge to any person’s happiness.
He however makes it impossible for women who fall in love in this way to bear the children of the man who summoned him. He is described as a dangerous entity that should ideally be left alone by the faint of heart. Zepar can however prove useful to the man who is only looking for sexual favors from women without intending to have any attachments.
If the tarot reading was upright, I will immediately begin to anticipate that new relationships can occur in the near future. The implication here is that the subject of the reading will possibly meet someone new and spark a romance. Alternatively, it can imply that there is an alignment of values that will occur between two people causing them to forge a relationship.
If the tarot reading was reversed, I will take a more cautious approach. This is because the reversed reading is usually interpreted to mean the occurrence of disharmony. Therefore, I usually imagine that the meaning here is that there is turbulence to be expected in the near future. Being cautious therefore helps in avoiding conflict which can arise from misalignment of values.
