Abyzou is a female demoness known for killing babies. In Hebrew mythology, the name means “abyss”.
In the Jewish tradition, Abyzou is identified as Lilith, in Byzantine culture with Gylou while in Coptic Egypt with Alabasandria.
According to the Medieval text, this demoness is said to have innumerable names. Some examples are: Abizou, Obizu, Obizuth, Obyzouth, and Byzou, Amorphous, Karkhous, Brianê; Bardellous; Aigyptianê; Barna; Kharkhanistrea; Adikia , Myia etc…. To know her different names is important because through her names she can be captured and restricted from causing harm. She is pictured on amulets with either fish- or serpent-like attributes.
Abilities:
This demoness is said to be responsible for all the miscarriages, stillbirths and infant mortalities. This spirit wanders at night searching for pregnant women that are about to give birth. When she finds any, she then strangles the baby that is newly born. According to the Legends, it was said that her reason for killing babies is because she was cursed with infertility. So, she kills other people’s babies out of jealousy.
Abyzou can also cause infertility. According to the Testament of Solomon, she is also said to be responsible for causing other health conditions such as problems of the eye, ear, throat and insanity.
This demoness can be contacted by those who seek to understand the essence of the Vampyre and are in search of spiritual immortality. You can summon her using the Sigil of Az-Jahi.
Appearance:
In the Testament of Solomon, Abyzou was described as a demoness that appears with a greenish gleaming face and her hair is like wide and serpent-like. She often appears with darkness with the lower part of her body hidden.
How to Control Abyzou
This demoness of death can be controlled using the Magic of Solomon. The use of charms and sending petitions to St. Michael, Archangel Raphael or St. Sisinnious, can protect the pregnant woman from being harmed by this demoness.
The names of a demon can be used to ward him off. So by knowing and inscribing all the names correctly, the demon will be held at bay. If prior to the delivery, the pregnant woman were to write the names of Abyzou on a scrap of Papyrus then this spirit will flee from their sight and the child would be unharmed.
Abyzou On Medical Amulets
In the Near Eastern and Graeco Roman magico-medical tradition, healing amulets were inscribed with phrases that order the ailment to depart. In this case, it is assumed that the ailments are caused by demons and when the name of that demon is inscribed on the amulet and commanded to depart, then the sickness would be gone. Such a practice can be compared to exorcism.
