Heramael, the Demon that Teaches Healing

Heramael is another demon mentioned within the Grimorium Verum although he is not ascribed to any hierarchy. There are no mentions of this demon within other major grimories contributing to a discernible lack of detailed information regarding him. Not much is known regarding Heramael as consistent with the other demons in this hierarchy. By hiding his true identity in mystery, the true nature of Heramael is simply impossible to know therefore necessitating only experienced conjurors to attempt his invocation.

THE BOOK OF LIES by Aliester Crowley

The Grimorium Verum states the following regarding this demon: “Heramael teaches the art of healing, including the complete knowledge of any illness and its cure, He also makes known the virtues of plants, where they are to be found, when to pluck them, and their making into a complete cure.”

The office of this demon has to do with matters pertaining to health and medicine as well as knowledge of useful herbs and stones of value. He can thus be called forth to provide counsel on this matters and others that relate to his office with great effect.

Not much else is known regarding Heramael as consistent with the other demons in this hierarchy. By hiding his identity in mystery, the true nature of this demon is presently impossible to know therefore meaning only fairly experienced conjurors should attempt his invocation. The lack of specific information regarding him means that there can be no knowing his true motives. The demon could be malevolent, benevolent, or even indifferent towards human beings although there can be no way of knowing conclusively.

Heramael can be invoked through the same ritual for summoning inferior demons posited in the Grimorium Verum. It is a complicated ritual which is outlined in the Grimorium Verum specifically for this purpose. The ritual asks the medium to avoid all forms of biblical sin nor have any sexual contact for three days prior to the invocation. After this, the last steps in the process of the invocation of Heramael can be done by the medium. Despite this seeming difficulty, it is the simplest ritual for invoking the inferior demons found within the Grimorium Verum.

History

According to the Grimorium Verum, this demon first appears within recorded history with the publication of the grimoire in 1817. Prior to this, there are no discernible or credible records of this demon. There are also no links with ancient Graeco-Roman or early Middle Eastern mythologies thereby adding to the lack of information regarding his historical background. The likelihood is that the original identity of Heramael is that of a pagan god which has since been lost in history with the spread of Christianity as the predominant religious force in the recent past.
