The Ouija Board (or Witch Board), holds a very special spot in my heart. It is a wonderful, yet much maligned, tool that we can use to communicate with our beloved dead and familiars.
Ouija boards are also traditionally used to call upon any random spirit/s that happens to be in the area at that time. For example, when you move into a home and you know there is “something” in the house but have no clue as to who that something is, then calling out “if there is a spirit in the house, I ask for you to make your presence known to us……” is what we do. Yet the Ouija Board can also be used to facilitate the communication between us and a specific spirit, or even a demon.
How does the planchette move?
So how is does the Ouija Board planchette actually move? I see the Ouija board as a divination tool of sorts. The Witch Board is nothing more than a physical objective object that you use to commune with your subjective deep mind. But who really controls your mind?
Like a pendulum used for divination, when you ask the pendulum a question, it will move in a circle to the left, or a circle to the right, or from side to side. Each of these movements indicates a yes or no response, depending on how the pendulum owner has “tuned” their pendulum. While the individual is holding the pendulum, the answers to the questions asked come from spirit, and the way spirit interacts with our thoughts is the magick itself.
Magick is the transference of energy. Think of it like electricity. We can’t see electricity unless we have a physical object from where we can prove its existence. We know electricity is there, each time we flick a switch and see the light come on. Energy is all around us. It is in every living object. Nature is abundant in energy too – from rocks, to trees, and rivers etc.
The spirit world communicates with us by using the sources of energy in the environment around us, to manifest direct communication to us. As people, we are one huge bundle of energy, so it should now make sense that spirits can use the energy we produce, to send answers to questions through our subconscious mind, so we can physically move the planchette.
The idea of the spirit connecting directly with your mind could seam scary to you. For many people who fear spirits and ghosts, the idea of a spirit manifesting before their very eyes is terrifying enough, let alone thinking that the spirit will connect with their thoughts.
Let me share a truth that may help you relax a little. Spirits, demons, ghosts and various of entities are already all around us. We just don’t see or hear them, most of the time. The Ouija Board is just another tool we can use to try and bridge the communication between the two worlds.
Calling on a Specific Spirit or Demon
If you are comfortable in your witchcraft or occultist practices, you may wish to communicate with a specific spirit.Or if you are taking the working with demons class, I ask students to work on forming a relationship with the demon so to receive answers to questions, amongst other things.
The benefit of getting to know one spirit well is that you can channel the spirit faster, and communicate much easier. Think of it like the difference between you talking to a stranger on the street, or with your best friend. Your best friend understands you, and speaks your language. Better still, your best friend likes you and wants to see you happy. They have your back!
Now then, how to communicate with a specific spirit or demon using the ouija board is similar to the way you would normally use the board. If you don’t have a ouija board, you could spread rune stones or cards with letters and numbers. Use an upturned glass as a planchette. I often use a shot glass as a planchette.
If you use a board be sure to affix a pentacle, or the demons sigil, on the underside of the board or table. It helps ground the spirit to the board, I.e. affix, and focus the spirit to the vehicle of communication.
You can draw the pentagram or sigil on paper and glue or carve it in a plate of silver or wax and set the board on top as well if you plan to use it more often.
Candles are used for a couple of reasons. Firstly, for lighting, as you can’t read the board if you’re sitting in the dark. Secondly, for the energy produced from a burning candle flame – the element of fire.
Use a candle color of your spirit or demon or large black candles. Another good idea would be to burn herbs that aid in communication. Some demons like the smell of certain herbs or resins and these should be burned to entice the demon into the room.
If you are not used to working with an Ouija Board, then it is best to work for the board with a few people present. In this case, it is more than the additional people acting as your scribble, taking down note of the letters appearing. It is difficult to connect to spirit AND take notes at the same time.
Light your Black Candle or candle of choice, and get into a slight ecstatic trance and begin to sway slowly from side to side. Perhaps you would like to provide a blood offering on the candle to spirit. A drop will be enough.
Think about the spirit or demon that you want to reach and chant its name like a mantra. You should actually chant to the board. When you feel ready, place your fingers on the planchette. Remember to call the spirit by name.
TIP – You might want a recording device nearby so that you can speak out the letters and words for better recall later; you might get some EVP’s too!
In closing your session, ensure that you thank the spirit or demon for its connection, and ask that you both depart now in peace. I also advise that you “ground” your own energy. You can find several ways of doing this grounding of energy, however, I like to simply place my hands on the ground, and think of the energy of the session releasing into the earth.
If you don’t ground yourself, the residual energy remaining in your body could make you feel tired or depressed.
Always follow up on the information gained, but never follow the directions until you have thought out all of the possible effects that it may cause. A spirit asking for a sacrifice should probably be sent back to the abyss, but you never know it could be a test, so ask for clarification. Don’t be afraid to say no.
Enjoy!
