“…Ose is a Great President of Hell, ruling three legions of demons (thirty to other authors, and Pseudomonarchia Daemonum gives no number of legions). He makes men wise in all liberal sciences and gives true answers concerning divine and secret things; he also brings insanity to any person the conjurer wishes, making them believe that they are king and wearing a crown, or a Pope. However, his spells only last 1 hour at a time. Additionally, Ose has the ability to transform people into animals. The victims of the curse will be unaware that they were turned into animals. Ose is depicted as a leopard that after a while changes into a man.”

In my own deck of cards, I have given Ose the High Priestess tarot from the Major Arcana. This is because of the vast knowledge which this demon possesses and is able to pass to the conjuror at will. However, in staying true with the Occult Tarot deck, I will give him the 7 of Cups. My hope for this article is to pick one card daily for inspiration and guidance. I also hope to get a response from one of our beloved demons here at the coven.
The Cups are usually associated with the element of water. When it comes to tarot readings, the element of water usually indicates that the subject is thinking emotionally rather than rationally. There is a desire to revert from thinking with the heart to begin thinking with one’s head. The 7 of Cups is usually interpreted to mean wishful thinking, illusions, fantasies, dreams, choices, or opportunities. When it appears reversed in a reading however, it is taken to mean being overwhelmed by choices, personal values, or alignments.
Cup Archetypes are described as very emotional people to the point where this counts as a weakness. They suffer with extreme emotional outbursts of anger, love, hope, sorrow, et cetera. When it comes to the 7 of Cups, these Archetypes usually have to control their fantastical thinking to adjust to a more realistic train of thought. This helps them to make better decisions that can allow them to get ahead in life.
The 7 of Cups is a tarot card that can be found in the Minor Arcana. I usually refer to this card as the “Dream Card” because of its interpretations. When upright, it is taken to mean fantasy and the stuff of imagination – these are consistent with the emotional nature of Cup Archetypes. When it is reversed, it is interpreted as being overwhelmed by choices or even the development of personal values.
It depicts a man standing before seven cups that bear different gifts and curses. There are clouds within the background perhaps indicating the fantasies that the subject has. Given the combination of curses and gifts in the cups, it is perhaps a warning that people should be careful about what they wish for. One should look past illusions and imagination in order to focus on what is truly important.
The Demon
Ose is a fallen angel and one of the 72 spirits that were bound by King Solomon to a brass vessel. More specifically, Ose is the 57th of these 72 demons according to the Ars Goetia. He is a Great President of Hell with dominion over an unspecified number of legions of lesser demons – the majority of accounts report him as having control over three legions. He is described as an ambiguous demon with the ability to both delude and give true answers.
There are several other names used to refer to this demon such as: Oz, Oze, Voso, Oso, and Ozemos. There is not much knowledge surrounding the origins of this demon within either early Middle Eastern mythologies or ancient Graeco-Roman texts. Therefore, we only conclude that he is Jewish by virtue of being one of the 72 spirits of Solomon posited in the Ars Goetia. He can be found in major grimoires such as the Dictionnaire Infernal and the aforementioned ones.
Ose is described as first appearing in the form of a leopard – there is nothing otherwise monstrous about his appearance. The demon however takes the shape of a human being upon making his appearance. He is said to be able to give true answers to any question that the conjuror may present to him. However, he is also said to be overly eager to cause delusion or insanity with his spells lasting up to one hour at a time.
Note – this demon is ambivalent towards human beings being equally capable of honesty and deception.
The Message
Is anyone hiding something from me? Am I being deluded?
Ose is obviously a powerful demon given his high placement in the hellish realm. It is possible to leverage his powers to forge a competitive advantage especially when it comes to the learning of liberal sciences. He is also capable of revealing the things that are held in secrecy to the conjuror. His powers can also be used for malevolence with attacks being aimed at the enemies and rivals of the conjuror. For instance, he can make them temporarily insane.
When working with this demon, I would ordinarily ask him to reveal secrets to me. He can make me aware of whether a person is trying to do me harm or take advantage of me. Alternatively, he can reveal secrets to me that can help me to get ahead in life such as the locations of valuable knowledge or artifacts. I may also ask him questions on matters of personal interest because he gives true answers to all questions.
If the 7 of Cups appears in a reading, I will immediately begin to grow suspicious of people within my surrounding. I will look to Ose to reveal to me the things that are being held in secrecy and help me to overcome this danger. In a few days to a week, I should discern something that was previously hidden from me. If I do not sense anything then I will assume that the danger has passed or is still yet to come.
