In History
APHRODITE was the Olympian goddess of love, beauty, pleasure and procreation. She was depicted as a beautiful woman often accompanied by the winged godling Eros (Love). Her attributes included a dove, apple, scallop shell and mirror. In classical sculpture and fresco she was usually depicted nude.
It was believed that she helped people in finding love and forging strong relationships.
People believed that honoring Aphrodite led to better relationships and brought them closer to finding their true loves. Her divine beauty and seductive powers captivated people, and they paid homage to her through temples, statues, and festivals.
LOVERS
Despite being married to Hephestus she was continuously unfaithful and her most well-known consort was Ares. However, she also slept with Poseidon, Hermes, Dionysus, Adonis, and Anchises.
Of Aphrodite’s mortal lovers, the most important were the Trojan shepherd Anchises, by whom she became the mother of Aeneas, and the handsome youth Adonis (in origin a Semitic nature deity and the consort of Ishtar-Astarte), who was killed by a boar while hunting and was lamented by women at the festival of Adonia. The cult of Adonis had underworld features, and Aphrodite was also connected with the dead at Delphi.
Today, people still honor Aphrodite as a symbol of beauty, love, and sexuality.
REMEMBER – the ancient Greeks believed that all their deities were immortal.
