Juno, the Roman equivalent of Hera, was the queen of heaven and sister spouse of the king of the gods and men, Jupiter. Juno protected the nation of Rome as a whole but was the special guardian of women in all aspects of their life, especially in marriage and childbirth. Individualized, she became a female guardian angel; as every man had his genius, so every woman had her Juno. Thus, she represented, in a sense, the female principle of life. Juno is depicted in art as a strong, dignified woman with a stern beauty.
