The Exorcist

Without doubt, one of my favourite annual movies to watch, because it gets me a little closer to the devil each time I watch it !!!! yeah… i mean it!

“The Exorcist” is a groundbreaking horror film that tells the chilling story of a young girl named Regan, who becomes possessed by a demonic entity. As her condition worsens, her mother, Chris MacNeil, seeks help from medical professionals, but when conventional treatments fail, she turns to Father Karras, a Jesuit priest who is also a psychiatrist struggling with his own crisis of faith. The film follows their harrowing journey as they confront the dark forces tormenting Regan, culminating in a dramatic and intense exorcism that tests their faith and resolve.

This film has earned its status as a classic and a cult favorite for several reasons. First, its exploration of deep themes like faith, doubt, and the battle between good and evil resonates with many viewers. The unsettling atmosphere, masterful cinematography, and groundbreaking special effects, especially for the time, create a visceral experience that leaves a lasting impact. Additionally, the performances, particularly by Linda Blair as Regan and Jason Miller as Father Karras, are both powerful and haunting, drawing audiences into the emotional and psychological turmoil of the characters.

The film’s ability to provoke genuine fear and unease is another factor in its enduring appeal. It transcends typical horror tropes, delving into existential questions that challenge viewers long after the credits roll. Its controversial subject matter and groundbreaking approach to horror also sparked discussions and debates that contributed to its cult status. Over the years, “The Exorcist” has not only influenced countless filmmakers but also become a cultural touchstone, referenced in various media, making it a film that continues to be loved and revered by audiences old and new.

The Pope’s Exorcist

This is another movie to watch, if only to get more information on Demons, and how Demons negatively involved himself in human affairs – normally, in a human, who is weak or vulnerable.

“The Pope’s Exorcist” is an engaging film that draws viewers in with its blend of supernatural horror and intriguing storytelling. The movie follows Father Gabriele Amorth, the Vatican’s chief exorcist, who tackles a series of intense demonic possessions. The character, based on a real-life figure, brings a unique perspective to the age-old battle against evil, blending faith with psychological intrigue.

One of the reasons the film resonates with audiences is its exploration of themes like good versus evil, faith, and redemption. It delves into the complexities of belief and the moral dilemmas faced by those fighting against dark forces. The combination of horror elements and psychological tension keeps viewers on the edge of their seats, while the well-crafted narrative allows for deeper reflections on spirituality and the nature of evil.

Moreover, the film features compelling performances that add depth to the characters, particularly the portrayal of Father Amorth. His journey not only involves battling external demons but also confronting his own doubts and struggles, making him relatable and compelling. The cinematography and atmospheric sound design enhance the unsettling experience, drawing viewers into the haunting world of the story.

Overall, “The Pope’s Exorcist” captivates audiences by merging thrilling horror with profound themes, making it both entertaining and thought-provoking. It taps into universal fears and curiosities about the supernatural, allowing viewers to experience a chilling yet fascinating exploration of the battle between light and darkness.

2013-03-10 03.08.21CLASSICS

Personally, I remember watching the Wizard of Oz as a very young girl, and feeling so sorry for the wicked witch the west. She was so misunderstood, and pushed away and rejected by everyone. Was she so evil? Or was she really protecting herself?

Did you watch a movie which inspired you towards magic? I would love to hear your favorite movie below.

Meantime these are some popular cult classics…..

  • The Devil Rides Out – a 1934 novel by Dennis Wheatley – made into a famous film by Hammer Studios in 1968
  • The Craft – a 1996 film featuring four friends who become involved in white witchcraft but turn to black magic rituals for personal gain.
  • The Harry Potter series – black magic, including various spells and curses, is referred to as “the dark arts” against which students are taught to defend themselves.
  • Final Fantasy – a video game in which white and black magic are simply used to distinguish between healing/defensive spells (such as a “cure”) and offensive/elemental spells (such as “fire”) and do not carry an inherent good or evil connotation.
  • Charmed – a television series in which black magic is also known as “the black arts”, “dark arts”, “dark magic” or even “evil magic”, and is used by demons and other evil beings.
  • The Secret Circle – A short-lived television series featuring witches, in which there are two kinds of magic. While traditional magic helps you to connect to the energy around you, more lethal and dangerous dark magic is rooted in the anger, fear and negativity inside you. Only a few born with it can access dark magic and some are inherently stronger than others.
  • The Power of Five is an entire series by Anthony Horowitz about black magic and evil sorcerers. The antagonists are all black sorcerers and are all practitioners of black magic, black magic is a means of summoning the Old Ones from their prison, Hell. Black magic often takes the form of mass murder and animation of inanimate objects.
  • Night Watch – In the Night Watch book (and movie) series the magicians are grouped into two sides “Light Others” and “Dark Others”. The dark magicians are more motivated by selfish desires.
  • Supernatural (U.S. TV series) – The television series Supernatural features many events and characters that feature and participate in black magic.

Favourite witchcraft movies

Okay, here is my guilty pleasure. My favourite witchcraft movie and I watch this at least once a year is Practical Magic. I know I know!

Practical Magic.

“Practical Magic” is a beloved witchcraft movie for several reasons that resonate deeply with viewers. At its core, the film beautifully explores the themes of sisterhood through the bond between Gillian and Sally, showcasing the power of family and support. Their relationship emphasizes love, loyalty, and the strength that comes from being there for one another, which many find inspiring. The whimsical and magical atmosphere created in the film adds to its charm; with enchanting visuals, spells, and a beautiful setting, it invites audiences into a captivating world where magic feels accessible and real.

Moreover, the journeys of self-discovery and empowerment that both sisters undergo are significant. They learn to embrace their identities and the gifts associated with being witches, which can resonate with viewers on personal levels. The romantic elements interwoven in the plot add warmth and charm, balancing the darker themes of love and loss, and showcasing the complexities of relationships. The blend of humor with deeper emotional themes creates a relatable experience, as the quirky nature of the characters and their interactions often elicit laughter, making it enjoyable to watch.

The film also masterfully combines elements of magical realism, allowing audiences to escape into a world where magic is part of everyday life, offering both comfort and excitement. Its timeless messages about acceptance, resilience, and the importance of love and community are universal, making the story relatable across different contexts. Finally, the aesthetic appeal, from the costumes to the set design and cinematography, enhances the overall experience, turning “Practical Magic” into a visual feast. All of these elements come together to create a feel-good film that celebrates magic in both its literal and metaphorical forms, making it a cherished favorite for many.

I STRONGLY suggest this film without any hesitation for those who truly want an inside glimpse of what the work truly entails. My all time favorite film.
