Ritual to Break Away from a Negative Past & Start a New Beginning

the death tarot card for new beginning spells

Letting go of the past is not always an easy thing to do and even when a person makes an attempt to move on, the pains of the past could still be there to torment the individual. For example The memory of a bad relationship, the loss of a loved one, an unhappy childhood experience, the trauma of some life situation, or an accident.

You could try alternative health treatments, such as kinesiology, and these types of treatments can help detect the place in your body where you’re holding the pain or the trauma and release it from your body physically as well as mentally. However not all of us have access to treatments from medical professionals, and we prefer to do the work spiritually and magically.

Here we’re talking about witchcraft, and so in this post, I’m going to share with you a variety of various witchcraft methods to clear yourself from toxicity of the heart!

Cut & Clear Spells

A Cut and Clear spell is a powerful ritual used in hoodoo, witchcraft, and other folk magic traditions to sever ties with past relationships, situations, or influences that are holding you back. This spell is particularly effective when you want to move on from a difficult breakup, let go of negative emotions, or clear away lingering energies that no longer serve you.

Purpose of the Cut and Clear Spell:

  • To cut ties with past relationships, situations, or emotions.
  • To clear away negative energy or lingering attachments.
  • To make room for new opportunities, relationships, or positive energy.

Materials Needed:

  1. Cut and Clear Oil: (If you don’t have it, you can make your own following the recipe I provide below).
  2. A Black Candle: Represents banishing, protection, and cutting ties.
  3. A White Candle: Symbolizes purity, new beginnings, and clarity.
  4. A Piece of Paper and Pen: To write down what you wish to cut away.
  5. A Pair of Scissors or a Knife: To symbolically cut the ties.
  6. A Fireproof Dish or Cauldron: For safely burning the paper.
  7. Salt: For protection and purification.
  8. Herbs: Optional, but you can include herbs like sage, rosemary, or bay leaves for added potency.
  9. A Mirror: To reflect the energy away from you (optional).
  10. A Personal Object: Something that represents the situation or person you’re cutting ties with (optional).

Steps to Cast a Cut and Clear Spell:

1. Prepare Your Space:

  • Cleanse your space by burning sage, palo santo, or any purifying incense. Focus on clearing away any lingering negativity.
  • Set up your altar or workspace with the candles, Cut and Clear Oil, and other materials. Place the black candle on the left side and the white candle on the right side.

2. Set Your Intention:

  • Sit quietly and meditate for a few minutes, focusing on your intention. Think about what you want to cut away and why it’s important for your personal growth and well-being.

3. Write It Down:

  • On the piece of paper, write down the name of the person, situation, or habit you wish to sever ties with. Be clear and specific about what you want to release.

4. Anoint the Candles:

  • Anoint the black candle with Cut and Clear Oil, starting at the top and moving downwards to symbolize banishing. As you do this, focus on the intention of cutting away the negative ties.
  • Anoint the white candle from the bottom up, symbolizing new beginnings and clarity. Focus on the positive energy and new opportunities you want to invite into your life.

5. Perform the Ritual:

  • Light the black candle first. As you light it, say:
    • “With this flame, I cut away all that no longer serves me. I release all negative ties, influences, and energies from my life.”
  • Take the piece of paper and cut it with scissors or a knife, symbolizing the cutting of ties. As you cut, visualize the ties being severed and the energy being released.
  • Burn the paper in the fireproof dish, allowing the smoke to carry away the negativity. You might say:
    • “As this paper burns, so do the ties that bind me. I am free, clear, and open to new possibilities.”
  • After the paper is burned, light the white candle. As you light it, say:
    • “With this flame, I welcome clarity, peace, and new beginnings into my life. My path is clear, and I am ready to move forward.”

6. Close the Ritual:

  • Let the candles burn down completely, if possible, to seal the spell. If you need to extinguish them, do so by snuffing them out rather than blowing them out.
  • Sprinkle salt around your space or on your altar for protection and to seal the energy.
  • Thank any spirits, deities, or energies you may have called upon during the ritual.

7. After the Ritual:

  • Dispose of the ashes and any remaining materials (such as candle remnants) away from your home. This symbolizes the final release of the negative energy.
  • Consider taking a cleansing bath with sea salt or herbs like rosemary to further cleanse your energy.
  • Focus on self-care and positive actions in the days following the ritual to reinforce the clearing process.

Cut and Clear Oil:

Cut and Clear Oil is a type of ritual oil used in hoodoo, conjure, and other folk magic practices. It is specifically crafted to help cut ties with negative influences, past relationships, or situations that no longer serve you and to clear the way for new beginnings. The ingredients in Cut and Clear Oil are carefully chosen for their symbolic and energetic properties that aid in cutting, cleansing, and clearing.

  1. Base Oil:
    • Carrier Oil: A neutral carrier oil such as olive oil, jojoba oil, almond oil, or sunflower oil is typically used as the base.

Making Cut and Clear Oil:

    • If using crystals, add a small piece of citrine or clear quartz to the bottle.
  3. Charging and Sealing:
    • Shake the bottle gently to mix the ingredients.
    • Hold the bottle in your hands and focus on your intention of cutting and clearing away all negative ties and influences. Visualize the oil being charged with your intent.

  4. Using Cut and Clear Oil:
    • Anoint candles with the oil during rituals or spells aimed at breaking ties and clearing away negativity.
    • Dab a little oil on your wrists or behind your ears before engaging in situations where you need to release or clear away something.
    • Use it to dress objects or papers in rituals designed to help you move on from the past.

Rituals

Break Free From Your Past Ritual

Best time

Dark moon (or dead moon), the best day is Saturday, but any other day is fine too. But honestly, I believe that you should start this as soon as you’re ready to begin. That means any day and anytime, which is more in alignment with folk Magic. If you’re following a witchcraft path, then perhaps you want to align your spell, according to planetary correspondences.

Requirements:

  • A charcoal disk and a fireproof plate
  • Incense mixture (for purification)
  • Matches or lighter
  • Chalk or salt for the magic circle
  • A dark blue candle (representing the deep mind or the unconscious mind)
  • A black cord (length 21cm)
  • Scissors
  • Another fire-proof dish to burn (for example, an old pot)

Procedure:

  • Write a list of your past experiences you would like to break free from. The best time to do this is a day after the dark moon.
  • Make a circle using chalk or salt.
  • Light the charcoal disk and the candle. Then say: “Where there was darkness, now there is light.”
  • Put the incense on the charcoal. Relax and feel how the smoke purifies the atmosphere.
  • Tie a knot on the left side of the cord, to represent your past. Tie another knot on the right side of the cord. It represents your future free of past experiences.
  • Ask for a greater power of light and love to come and help you.
  • There are two options on how to cut the connection between the past and the future. The first is to keep the “past” in your left hand, and the “future” in your right hand. Then let the flame burn through the cord. Another option is to cut the connection between the past and the future with scissors. Choose any option that is best for you.
  • After that, place the last knot together with the paper (your list) on the fireproof plate and let it burn completely.
  • Sit, relax, meditate. Pray to the Higher Power and believe that you have been set free from the past.
  • Say thanks to this Power for help.
  • End the ritual, pack the ashes and pour it into a flowing water. Or take it to the hill and let the wind blow it away.

New Beginning Ritual

Requirements:

  • A paper and pen
  • A plain black candle (black is for banishing)
  • A fireproof bowl or small cauldron
  • A plain green candle (green is linked to success and new ventures)
  • Any incense of your choice.

Steps:

  • Cast a circle if your tradition requires that you do so.
  • Light a black candle then spend a few minutes meditating on all issues affecting you and preventing you from moving forward.
  • REMEMBER – You can call on any of your favorite deities to assist you or you can call on the Universe.
  • When you are ready, recite this:

“Life is a twisting and turning path, ever changing and flowing.

My journey has brought me this far, and I am ready to take the next step.

I call upon the energies and powers of [deity name, or simply The Universe]

to guide me on my way.

Today, I say farewell to all that has prevented me from becoming the person

I wish to be.”

Write down all the past things that are affecting your present life. List out those things you would want to get off your life. Those things that make you feel stuck and prevent you from growing.

After writing them down, light the paper in the candle flames then place the burning paper into a cauldron or bowl. As you watch it burn, recite:

“I send you away, far from me, and far from my life.

You no longer have any influence on me.

You are my past, and the past is gone.

I banish you, I banish you, I banish you!”

Allow the paper to burn completely and when that is done, extinguish the black candle and light the green one. Now, the next thing to do would be to focus your thoughts on the new things you desire.

Do you need a new lover or a child? Do you need money? Would you love to relocate to a new city? Focus your thoughts on those things. Light the incense from the flames of the green candle then as the smoke ascends to the sky say:

“It is a time for change. It is time to begin anew.

It is time to be a new person, strong and secure and confident.

These are the things I will achieve,

and I ask [deity name or The Universe] for guidance and assistance.

I send my request out into the skies, to the heavens on this smoke,

and I know that I will become a better person for it.”

Say aloud those new things you wish. Be positive and affirmative while stating your confessions. For example, you can say; “I am healthy”, “I have found love”, “I am wealthy”, etc.

Reflect on the changes you hope to see then when you are done, extinguish the candle and end the ritual. After a few days, you will notice the beginning of new things in your life.

Divination exercise: The Death Card

Any ritual should be started with divination of some type. This will guide the spiritual message into your ritual. Any spell that you say online or in a book needs to be modified. Including the spell below. This is just the basic procedure before you receive your spiritual message and also include your own magical tools or traditions into the spell. I teach my students this is how you have the most success in magic, by modifying the ritual according to your own magical journey.

If you like the Tarot, you can use the Death card as a symbol for your ritual. It will symbolize the end of your suffering. Death must come first before a new beginning and this “death” will clear a new path for you.

The Death card in Tarot is a card of major transformation and new beginnings, and it probably won’t be easy. There’s a sense of security in what is old, and with something new coming into your life it’s natural to be a bit afraid. Give this new situation a chance and give yourself time to get comfortable with the new conditions. It could be as simple as getting your hair cut or changing your glasses frames, but it could be much bigger than that.

The basic symbols of the Death card are Death as a skeleton in black robes or armor. There may also be a scythe or a flag featuring a five-petaled rose. There may be other figures in the field, the most common and recurring is that of a child.

Today I want you to try an exercise as you find the death card from your Tarot deck. When you pull it from the rest of the cards, have you pulled it out in an upright position or a reverse position?

When the Death card is upright in a Tarot reading, it symbolizes transformation, making way for the new, loss, failure, illness or death, and bad luck. That might all sound bad, but think of this as the end of one chapter and the beginning of another! You are in a time of transition, and it’s best to embrace it even if it’s painful. And it might be. But everything good is worth working for, and you’re ready.

When the Death card is reversed in a Tarot reading, it stands for immobility, slow changes, a narrow escape, and cheating death. You’re resisting change, and that’s not good. You need to let go and move forward into a brighter future.

I’ll make a special note here if you’re releasing a person from a romantic relationship. The Death card might mean that you are hanging on to a relationship that is no longer serving you. If you’re single, it’s time to let go of old habits that have held you back from love. If you’re in a relationship, it’s time to either reconsider if you want to continue or make some difficult changes to get the love you deserve.

Make modifications to your spell based on your unique situation and circumstances. But let me just provide you some tips if you are newer to spellcasting and you’re not sure which incense to use for breaking free or releasing.

  • The scent of Myrrh will aid in releasing fears!
  • Olive leaves are known to aid in calming energies, balance, peace, releasing negativity healing, fertility, potency, protection, lust, and dispelling enemies.

  • Tiger Eye helps with new beginnings, intuition, fears, worries, depression, negativity, emotional stress, self confidence, and stamina.

FINAL THOUGHTS

If you’re working this spell on a weekly basis, as I suggested above, then I also suggest that you modify this spell to include any deity that you’re currently working with to help support you along this journey. Every individual will have their unique method of making the magic happen. By this I’m suggesting that you could use perhaps the tools of your tradition, the elements, your god, or goddess, or even herbs and roots that have been magically charged. All of these individually or combined make for a powerful spell.

A Cut and Clear spell is a potent way to release past influences and clear the path for new, positive energies in your life. By performing this ritual with clear intentions and focus, you can effectively sever ties with what no longer serves you and embrace new opportunities for growth and happiness. Cut and Clear Oil is a versatile tool in magical practices, so you can create a powerful oil to aid in your spiritual work of cutting ties and clearing the path for new opportunities and positive energy.
