Sustugriel is another demon mentioned within the Grimorium Verum although he is not ascribed to any hierarchy or servitude. This demon is otherwise obscure within demonology circles contributing to the lack of specific information regarding his nature. The lack of detail regarding demons’ specific identities is a major and recurrent theme throughout the Grimorium Verum. By hiding his true identity in mystery, the true nature of this demon is simply impossible to know therefore necessitating only experienced conjurors to attempt his invocation.
The Grimorium Verum states the following regarding this demon: “Sustugriel teaches the art of magic. He gives familiar spirits that can be used for all purposes, and he also gives mandragores.” The office of this demon has to do with the provision of knowledge regarding all magical affairs and to furnish the conjuror with familiars to assist in service. The demon is also capable of providing mandrakes which are a potent ingredient of many magic rituals. Not much else is known regarding this demon as consistent with the other demons in this grimorie.
The lack of specific information regarding him means that there can be no knowing his true motives. The demon could be malevolent, benevolent, or even indifferent towards human beings although there can be no way of knowing conclusively. Like the other inferior demons listed within the Grimorium Verum, this demon retains potency and it is important that he is accorded the necessary respect. The steps leading up to his conjuration should also be done correctly and in the required sequence. In so doing, the risk of malevolence is reduced while the chance of a desirable outcome is increased.
Sustugriel can be invoked through the same ritual for summoning inferior demons posited in the Grimorium Verum. The ritual outlined in the Grimorium Verum specifically for this purpose requires one to do a lot of steps and is fairly difficult. It asks the medium to avoid all forms of sin nor have any sexual contact for three days prior to the invocation. After this, the last steps in the process of the invocation of Heramael can be done by the medium. Despite this seeming difficulty, it is the simplest ritual for invoking the inferior demons found within the Grimorium Verum.
History
The first time that this demon is mentioned within recorded history is during the publication of the Grimorium Verum in 1817 whereupon he was listed. Not much is known regarding Sustugriel as consistent with the other demons in this grimoire. Ancient Middle-Eastern mythology or early Graeco-Roman narratives do not make mentions of this demon further adding to the mystery surrounding him. This demon was quite likely an early pagan god who was demonized with the spread of Christianity throughout the early civilizations in the Middle Ages.

Hi,
Thank you so much for your website and all of the offerings and information sharing y’all do. I am very grateful for this huge body of work. I am curious, do you use the above script when invoking or conjuring demons? I would feel weird saying a very Catholic prayer at the end. I know so much of the literature contains the Christian way of evoking demons and using angels to constrain them because most of the available writing was by Christians. I was wondering if this is how you perform your invocations and if others in the forum do as well. Also what are the results like?. Thank you so much!
