A seven-day glass jar candle is a tall, sturdy, glass-encased candle designed to burn slowly and steadily, typically for four to nine days depending on the environment, wick, and how the practitioner works with it. This variability is not a flaw but an important part of the spellcasting process itself. As the candle burns, practitioners read the flame behavior, smoke, and timing alongside the wax patterns as forms of divination, gaining ongoing insight into how the working is unfolding.
Originally rooted in Catholic novena traditions, these candles have been widely adopted and adapted across Hoodoo, Santería, folk magic, and modern occult practices. In Hoodoo and conjure communities they are often called 7-day vigil candles or jumbo candles. In Santería and related traditions they may be referred to as veladoras or velas de siete días. In general metaphysical and witchcraft circles they are commonly known simply as seven-day jar candles or novena candles.
They are popular in these areas because they provide a safe, self-contained way to maintain focused energy over an extended period without needing to relight or rebuild the working daily. Some jars come pre-printed with specific intentions, saints, or orisha imagery, while plain versions allow full customization with herbs, oils, and petitions. Whether labeled or blank, they create a contained sacred space that concentrates the work and allows the candle’s behavior to serve as an ongoing oracle.
“Don’t All These Candles Just Burn the Same?”
One of the most common questions I hear from people who are just starting out with seven-day glass jar candles is, “Don’t they all burn pretty much the same?” If that is the question running through your mind right now, this section is especially for you. We want you to have the best possible results in your own practice, so let us address that doubt directly and give you confidence when you light your first candle at home.
Here is a clear example from our own temple work. Imagine five different customers each ordering a money drawing candle from us. We use the exact same type of candle for each of them. They are all prepared and lit under similar conditions. Yet each customer has their own unique petition and personal situation. Even though the candles are identical on the outside, each one takes its own journey. The flame, burn time, soot, and wax patterns develop differently for every single one. That is the spirit giving its own personalized message for that specific working.
You can choose to read those messages for guidance on what to do next, or you can simply set the candle with your intention and let spirit do what it will. Both approaches are valid.
An example of not reading the spiritual message from the candle, is seen at local botanicas. For example, here in New Orleans, where people buy a candle, have it “dressed” and then they light the candle, say their prayer or petition, and walk away. The candle sits among hundreds of others, so there is no individual interpretation. All of the jars are just tossed out when they are finished.
When you burn one at home or have us do the work for you, reading the jar becomes an optional way to receive spiritual feedback.
If you are skeptical that is completely normal. Start with one candle, set a clear intention, and watch what happens. You will begin to see the magic for yourself. It’s like the flame itself becomes a living oracle tailored to that specific working. That’s one of the most exciting parts of learning this type of magic, the candle doesn’t just hold space; it communicates.
AT BWC – this is perfect for working, such as when you’re giving devotions or praise candles to certain spirits, because you want to be able just to light the candle as an offering to the spirit.

Colour Choices for Your Seven Day Jar Candles
Now we convinced you that these are truly magical items. Let us discuss the next level of choosing your jar, and we will start with color.
Color is one of the first and most important decisions when you work with seven day glass jar candles. Each color carries its own traditional energy and associations that help align the candle with your specific intention.
If you walk a Left Hand Path or practice within an occultist or daemonic framework, you may wonder whether traditional color correspondences still apply or if they feel too restrictive. The good news is there is no problem at all with sticking to black, white, or plain jars. In these traditions your personal intention, focus, and connection to the spirits or entities you work with carry far more weight than any rigid color system.
Black is often favored for its power in banishing, domination, protection, and transforming energy, while white remains excellent for clarity, summoning, or general workings. Plain jars give you complete freedom to dress them exactly as your ritual demands.
The table below covers the most common associations used across Hoodoo, Santería, and Left-Hand Path traditions.
| Color | Primary association | Common ritual use |
|---|---|---|
| Red | Strength, passion, domination | Love workings, power spells |
| Green | Prosperity, growth, abundance | Money magic, business success |
| Black | Banishment, protection, reversal | Baneful work, cord cutting |
| White | Purification, clarity, spirit contact | Cleansing, ancestor work |
| Purple | Psychic power, authority | Divination, commanding work |
| Blue | Peace, healing, communication | Reconciliation, calm |
| Orange | Ambition, attraction, legal matters | Court cases, opportunity |
| Yellow | Intellect, confidence, success | Mental clarity, persuasion |
Choosing Between Plain and Pre-Printed Jars
Once you have selected your color, the next decision is whether to go with a plain jar or one that is pre printed with images, prayers, or specific intentions. Both options are excellent, but they serve slightly different needs. Plain jars give you complete creative freedom. You can dress them exactly as you like with your own herbs, oils, petition papers, sigils, or personal items. This makes them ideal for custom spellwork, personal pacts, or when you want the ritual to be fully tailored to your unique situation. Many experienced practitioners prefer plain jars for this reason because the work feels more personal and connected.
Pre printed or labeled jars, on the other hand, are convenient and ready to use right out of the box. They often feature saints, orishas, specific goals like money drawing or protection, and matching prayers. These are wonderful for beginners or for quick workings when you want a focused intention without spending extra time on dressing. In botanicas and metaphysical shops they are very popular because they provide an immediate spiritual roadmap.
At Black Witch Coven we love to use these in our candle magic services for this purpose. For example, if we are doing a court case candle, we are going to use something like a win at court or just judge candles, and we will not just burn one. We might burn a series.
In Hoodoo magic you burn candles in odd numbers. It is just a thing with this style of magic, and so we are going to burn these candles one after another. Now you do not have to do that. That is just what we like to do, but we like to keep a continuous flame going against things. If we are cursing someone we are going to use DUME candles, and very visibly we can see that the candle is for doom! You have got the skull image of DUME on the jar, and it is very clear what that intention is for, so it really helps you. The reason why is because it helps you keep focused and the energy in the jar focused on the intention.
There is no right or wrong choice. Many of us keep both types on hand depending on the goal. Either way, the real power comes from your focus and connection when you light it. For me, if I want to curse somebody and I don’t have the DUME candle available, I will use a black jar candle without hesitation and have no concern that my spell won’t be successful.
Pro Buying Tip: Before purchasing, tip the candle upside down and look through the glass base. A centered wick and consistent wax color with no visible air pockets indicate a well-made candle. Reject any candle where the wick is visibly off-center. Why? Because then it’s not really a spiritual candle, as the candle was already pre-designed to burn a certain way. When your wick is more to the side, there’s a probability that you’ll get a strong black soot on the glass jar, which means something, or if the wick is too close to the side, the jar will break, and that definitely means something !
How to Dress and Prepare Your Seven-Day Jar Candle
NOTE – in this post, we’re just giving you the easiest way to just get started. Of course, there’s a ton of information online through our own website, and even the course over on the Hoodoo Witch website if you want some additional tips. The info below is going to give you everything you need to do a Candle Magic spell.
Now that you have chosen your color and jar style, it is time to prepare the candle for your specific intention. This is where the real personalization begins and many practitioners say the energy really starts to build. Start with a clean, plain or pre-printed jar candle. If it is plain, you have full freedom to dress it exactly as you wish.
First, write your petition on a small piece of paper. Be clear and specific about what you want. Fold the paper toward you for drawing intentions or away from you for banishing. Place it under the candle or tuck it beside the wick. Next, anoint the candle with the right oil. Dab a little oil on your finger and rub it on the glass or the top of the wax in a clockwise direction for drawing or counterclockwise for banishing. Roll the candle in corresponding herbs if you like, or sprinkle a pinch on top. You can also add small items like a coin for money work, a name paper, or a personal concern.

For pre-printed jars, you can still add your own touches on top or around the base. Many people like to carve a sigil or name into the wax with a pin before lighting. Once it is dressed, set the candle on a fire-safe plate or holder, light it with intention, and speak your petition aloud. Keep it burning as continuously as possible, but if you need to extinguish it, use a snuffer or wet your fingers instead of blowing it out.
Dressing the candle is a beautiful, personal act that connects you to the work. Take your time with it and enjoy the process. The more focused your preparation, the stronger the results tend to be.
At Black Witch Coven you will notice that we sometimes place the petition paper under the jar and other times write directly on the glass with a black marker. When we write on the jar it is simply to make the intention clearly visible, to help the customer recognize their own candle, or to keep track of multiple jars when they are burning together on our altar space.
We are sharing this with you so you know that you can freestyle in whatever way feels right for your own workings. Some people love writing on the glass, others prefer tucking a paper underneath or folding it inside. There is no single correct way. Trust your intuition and do what strengthens your connection to the spell.

How to Read Your Burning Candle
One of the most rewarding parts of working with seven day jar candles is learning to read the flame, smoke, and wax as they burn. This is a form of divination that gives you real time feedback on how the energy is moving. Pay attention from the very first lighting and keep notes if you can.
The candle is communicating with you throughout the entire burn. Trust what you feel and see. It is all part of the magic. The continuous flame functions as a living symbol. It represents the practitioner’s intention remaining active in the world even when they are not physically present at the altar. This is the core spiritual logic of the format. You set the working in motion, and the candle holds it.
The seven day candle creates a ritual container with a defined start and end point. That structure prevents energy dilution, gives the working a clear temporal boundary, and trains the practitioner to commit to a working rather than abandoning it when results are not immediate.
Key symbolic associations practitioners track during a working:
- Steady, tall flame: The working is moving forward without significant resistance.
- Low, weak flame: Energy is blocked or the intention lacks clarity and force.
- Flame self-extinguishing: A significant obstacle is present, or the working needs to be restarted with a cleaner setup.
- Heavy black soot: Spiritual opposition, crossed conditions, or negative energy surrounding the target.
- Clean glass at completion: The working resolved without major interference.
- Wax pooling to one side: The energy is pulling in a specific direction, sometimes toward or away from a target person.
Reading these signals requires practice and honest observation. The tendency to interpret every positive sign as confirmation of success and every negative sign as temporary is a trap. Treat the candle as a neutral reporter.
A strong, tall, steady flame is usually a good sign that the work is going well and energy is flowing smoothly. A weak or flickering flame can mean obstacles or that more focus is needed. If the flame is very high or dancing wildly, it often shows intense energy or that spirits are working hard on your behalf. Soot or black smoke can indicate that negativity is being burned away, while a clean burn with little residue suggests the path is clear. The way the wax melts, pools, or forms shapes can also carry messages. Some people see symbols, letters, or even faces in the wax.
Remember that interpretation is personal. What matters most is how the candle behaves in relation to your specific intention. Over time you will develop your own relationship with these readings. If you prefer not to interpret and just want to set the intention and let spirit handle the rest, that is perfectly fine too. Many people do exactly that and still get powerful results.
We have a much larger guide on the website that breaks candle reading down in even more detail, so feel free to check that out when you are ready. This should not stop you from lighting your candle yourself, especially if it is something you really want. The most important part is to just light candles consistently.
Another reason why I love this type of magic is because it does not take a lot of magical skill per se, and it is rather affordable.
Step By Step: Basic 7-Day Candle Magic Spell
We have covered some of this above, but let’s go through this again in a step-by-step way so it is super easy for you just to grab a candle and let’s begin.
-
Choose the right candle. Select color based on your working’s core intention.
-
Prepare your altar space OR the spot where you’re placing the candle . Place the candle where it will not be moved for seven days. if you have pets, this needs to be a consideration as well, especially if your cat doesn’t fear candles.
-
Dress the candle – as suggested above basically, a few drops of oil and no more, and if you want to add herbs, that’s great as well
-
Set your intention clearly before lighting. Write it down in specific, present-tense language. “I am receiving $5,000 by the end of this month” is a workable intention. “I want more money” is not. Vague intentions produce vague results. Hold the written intention in your hands, read it aloud, and place it beneath the candle.
-
Light the candle with deliberate focus. Do not light it casually while distracted. Take a moment to state your intention aloud as the flame catches. This act marks the formal opening of the working.
-
Maintain the candle without moving it. Consistency and daily engagement are what give the working its power. Spend at least a few minutes each day at the altar, reinforcing your intention through visualization, prayer, or spoken petition. The candle holds the energy between sessions, but your daily attention feeds it.
-
If you must extinguish the flame, use a snuffer. Blowing out the flame is widely considered disrespectful to the working and disruptive to the energy. A candle snuffer costs almost nothing and removes this problem entirely.
-
Read the signs or dispose of the candle.
Pro Tip: If your candle goes out before day seven and you need to relight it, do so with the same focused intention you used on day one. Treat it as a renewal, not a failure. Note the day and flame behavior in a ritual journal so you can track patterns across multiple workings. At Black Witch Coven, if a flame goes out, we consider this significant and will take appropriate actions before relighting the flame. However, if it continues not to light, we will let the client know because this means something
Common mistakes when working with seven day candles
-
Interpreting every negative sign as catastrophe: A flickering flame or a small amount of soot does not mean the working has failed. It means something is present that requires attention. Observe, note it, and continue unless the candle self-extinguishes entirely. also, it’s really important to understand that black smoke on one candle isn’t necessarily bad, but if it was on a different type of candle, it can be very bad. You’ll develop your own system for interpreting the signs over time
-
Adding heavy herbs or oils inside the glass: Don’t go crazy with the oil. You only need a few drops, and make sure you keep it away from the wick. also remember that if you add too much herb into the jar and you don’t poke it down into the wax, it will create perhaps a fire that will char the glass at the top, and that’s not what you want
-
Losing focus after day two or three: Again, some people will say you need to come back to it every day. Other times, this isn’t practical, especially if you’re burning a series of candles where you’ve set the petition and you’re allowing spirit to work the spell.
-
Using a candle of poor quality: It does happen, and sometimes we will throw out boxes of candles if the supplier has created a batch where the candles will not light. This is really hard for you to know if it is due to poor quality, especially if you’ve just purchased one candle from a supplier and you’re using it at home. A lot of these jars are made really quickly and really cheaply, so while it is rare, it can happen
How 7-day candles fit into Left-Hand Path and occult practice
The seven day candle functions as a temporal container for sustained magic. This is its most precise description within a serious occult framework. The candle does not do the work for you. It holds the working open across time, giving the practitioner a structured period to direct will, reinforce intention, and receive feedback from the spiritual environment.
Within Left-Hand Path practice, this structure integrates naturally with demonic workings, pact magic, and baneful spells. A working with Clauneck for wealth generation, for example, benefits from a sustained energetic presence rather than a single-night petition. The candle keeps the channel open. Daily engagement at the altar, whether through spoken petition, offerings, or visualization, feeds the working and demonstrates seriousness to the entity being petitioned.
A seven day candle is not a shortcut. It is a commitment device. The practitioner who lights one and then ignores it for six days has not done a seven day working. They have done a one-day working with a candle that happened to stay lit.
Supplementary practices strengthen the working throughout the week. Chanting the entity’s enn or sigil work performed at the altar each day reinforces the connection. Written petitions placed beneath the candle accumulate weight over seven days. Offerings left at the altar signal ongoing reciprocity. The candle anchors all of these elements into a single, coherent working. You can read more about reading candle burn signals to deepen your interpretation of what the flame communicates during these extended workings.
The seven day format also builds spiritual discipline. Committing to seven consecutive days of altar work, even briefly each day, trains the practitioner to treat ritual as a practice rather than an event. That shift in orientation produces better results across every type of working, not just candle magic. For practitioners who want to understand why setting a series of candles compounds results beyond a single working, the seven day format is the natural entry point into that methodology.
THOUGHTS & COMMENTS
This is such an interesting and popular way to do a spell, and so if you have any questions about these spells, feel free to write your question or comment below, as we love answering comments.
Especially if you have a tip or a trick with your own practices…. in folk magic, it’s not about doing something right or wrong. It’s really about what works for you, and we’d love to hear what you’re doing too!
