Semyaza: The Leader of the Watchers

Semyaza (also spelled Shemyaza or Samyaza) is a prominent figure in ancient texts, notably the Book of Enoch. He was one of the leaders of the Watchers, a group of angels who descended to Earth to interact with humanity. The Watchers, led by Semyaza, were tasked with observing humanity, but they defied divine orders and chose to cohabit with human women. This union led to the birth of the Nephilim, beings described as giants or men of renown.

History:

According to the Book of Enoch, Samyaza (or Semyaza) was the leader of the Watchers, a group of angels tasked with observing humanity. Overcome by lust for mortal women, Samyaza and his followers chose to descend to Earth, violating divine laws. Their actions marked the beginning of their fall from grace, transforming them into fallen angels.

Samyaza, foreseeing the consequences of their rebellion, hesitated and expressed his fear to the other Watchers, saying:

“I fear ye will not indeed agree to do this deed, and I alone shall have to pay the penalty of a great sin.”

The other Watchers, however, reassured him by proposing a pact:

“Let us all swear an oath, and all bind ourselves by mutual imprecations not to abandon this plan but to do this thing.”

Bound by their collective oath, they carried out their plan, descending to Earth and taking mortal women as their companions. Their union gave rise to the Nephilim, a race of giants described as men of great strength and renown.

Associations with Azazel and Additional Lore

Samyaza is often linked to Azazel, another Watcher mentioned in the same texts. According to the Zohar, Samyaza had a romantic liaison with one of the daughters of Eve, resulting in the birth of two sons, Hiwa and Hiya. These offspring were said to have an insatiable appetite, consuming a thousand camels, horses, and oxen daily, symbolizing excess and corruption.

Warnings from Archangel Michael

In the Book of Enoch, Archangel Michael warned Samyaza and the other Watchers about the grave sins they had committed. This warning, however, did not deter the Watchers from their path, leading to their ultimate punishment. Samyaza and his followers were bound and cast into darkness, awaiting the final judgment.

Samyaza’s story is a profound tale of ambition, rebellion, and the consequences of defying divine order. It serves as a cautionary myth, illustrating the dangers of succumbing to desire and misusing power. Abilities:

Shemyaza is the Watcher who taught humans root cuttings, sorceries and enchantment. He is referred to as the Luciferian Witch Father and Initiator. He is a very powerful spirit with the power and knowledge of the Explicit Name of Creation. Due to his knowledge, he was able to ascend into the spirit world at will.

He was enamored with a maiden named Istar. He taught her the hidden name of God or the Mindless Force of Power which is declared by the Jewish Encyclopedia as Shem ha Meforash (Shemhamforash). He taught her the use of words which enabled her to ascend as a goddess into the heavens.

The abilities taught by the Watchers are symbolic. They were embedded within humanity during our evolution. This magical formula also serves as a symbol of self-transformation and mastery.

Appearance:

In the Luciferian Tarot, Shemyaza is found on the Knights OF Pentacles. He is symbolized as a man wearing a green robe, which represents his knowledge of the earth. He has a burning eye and is usually seen holding a knife (Athame) on his belt and holding roots with a pentacle shield.

Samyaza in Popular culture:

This Watcher was represented in a role as Esper Shemhazai in the video game Final Fantasy XII. Shemhazai is also a female horse like being created in opposition to Igeyorhm the Martyr. In Dominions 3: The Awakening and Dominions 4: The thrones, Samyaza and other five Watchers may be summoned from imprisonment to fight for the player.

In El Shaddai: The Ascension of the Metatron, the character Samyaza also appears as one of the seven fallen angels. In Soul Hackers, this character works with Azazel who is another fallen angel commonly used in games in the series.

In the Dragon in Our Midst book series, Samyaza appears as a prime antagonist. He appears as the imprisoned being in Hell in Wayne Barlowe’s novel titled God’s Demon.  This name also appears in Jacqueline Carey’s Kushiel’s Legacy Series.
