Diary of a Gypsy Witch -The Vesica Piscis Symbol

Symbols – Vesica Piscis

This gorgeous piece is one of two pendants I got from a my favorite store in Sydney for my most recent birthday, 8/8. I was originally going to get one large, probably crystal definitely magical, power pendant or ring.

I was captivated by this one, not only for all the womb of the world/goddess/yoni/divine feminine splendidness that the Vesica Piscis conveys, but also for the soothing aquatic balance it offers my fiery lioness.

And of course I didn’t miss the significance of the 8/infinity symbols either.

This piece was destined for me.

About Vesica Piscis

The Vesica Piscis…interlaces two circles…the bottom circle represents the human realm and the upper circle symbolizes the Divine; and the sacred space where they intersect – forming an oval with pointed ends – creates the third state of Divine manifestation in human affairs. This figure, too, represents the union of heaven and earth, spirit and matter. It, too, embodies the metaphysical principle, As Above, So Below…the Vesica Piscis has a more hidden esoteric significance…This significance is seen when the symbol is turned on its side. Now the central oval shape is vertical, reminiscent of the female vulva – and the crescents on either side suggest the waning and waxing moon. It is Goddess symbology!…

The Vesica Piscis is the 6th level of Sacred Geometry. It is also one of the common multicultural Goddess symbols. And not without reason. In Sacred Geometry, the Vesica Piscis is considered to be the source of literally all creation. As Charles Gilchrist writes, “The Vesica Piscis is literally the womb of the universe . . . the ever unfolding Mother of Sacred Geometry.”

Apparently, humans of every culture would agree. According to Walker, the Vesica Piscis was “a worldwide ancient synonym for the yoni, or vulva.” (Barbara Walker, The Woman’s Dictionary of Symbols & Sacred Objects, p 16.) “Yoni” refers to both the vulva and the womb. It has always signified a gateway between the worlds. This represents the feminine Creative power of the Goddess, the Mother of all . . . even the Gods. Vesica Piscis means “vessel of the fish.” This refers to the sea-water fragrance of the vulva. Walker continues, “One of the Hindu titles of the Great Goddess was “a virgin named Fishy Smell, whose real name was Truth.”

It is in Her honour that fish were eaten on Friday (Freya’s Day). The Vesica Piscis was so synonymous with what is most sacred, that even the Christians used it to confer sanctity on Christian figures and places of worship. It is likely these connections which brought the fish to be a symbol of Christ, ironic as that is.
