“Beelzebub or Beelzebul is a name derived from a Philistine god, formerly worshipped in Enkron, and later adopted by some Abrahamic religions as a major demon. The name Beelzebub is associated with the Canaanite god Baal. In theological sources, predominantly Christian, Beelzebub is another name for Satan. He is known in demonology as one of the seven princes of Hell. The Dictionnaire Infernal describes Beelzebub as being capable of flying, known as the ‘Lord of the Flyers’, or the ‘Lord of the Flies’”.

Personally, I have given Beelzebub the Moon tarot card in my deck of cards. This demon is one of the seven princes of Hell and this highlights his high placement in the demonic hierarchy. In certain accounts, Beelzebub is placed among the three highest ranking demons together with Lucifer and Astaroth (or Leviathan) – the evil trinity is composed of these three demons making them the most powerful in the demonic world. Beelzebub functions to spread blasphemy and belief in false gods, possess human bodies and lead them to carry out vile acts, or increasing the likelihood of war or lust. He is entirely a malevolent entity who was described by the angel Samael as the cruelest demon he ever faced. When path working with him, I would focus on the possession of enemies’ bodies and driving them towards vices.
The Moon is a tarot card which belongs to the Major Arcana. When it appears upright in a reading, it is associated with anxiety, inner confusion illusion, fear, and subconscious. When it is reversed, it is interpreted to mean release of fear or other repressed emotions. The card depicts a full moon in the night sky beset between two towers which are in the background. The moon is superseded by the sun with its light being dimmer than the latter. Closer to the foreground, two canines (a dog and a wolf) are positioned presumably howling at the moon representing the tamed and untamed aspects of the human mind. The foreground has a pool of water from which a crayfish crawls highlighting a developing conscience.
With Beelzebub, there is a desire to impart internal confusion on the enemies of the conjuror. He can lead the possessed individual to engage in activities that destroy their standing within the society thereby giving the conjuror something of a win. Indeed, this is the demon’s specialty and is consistent with his malevolent nature towards human mortals. Its symbol of the fly is universally associated with impurity, something that is tainted or dirty. Therefore, malevolent conjurors can find a useful ally in Beelzebub if they are able to correctly summon and bind this demon. However, his potent nature means that he should only be summoned by the most experienced of conjurors lest he possesses you and leads you to commit horrific acts.
The Demon
Beelzebub was a god of the Philistines during ancient times. His origins are mostly Judeo-Christian as he is mentioned in the bible extensively. Among the books which make mention of this demon are Kings, Mark, Matthew, and Luke. He is mostly depicted as a fly which is consistent with the Philistine god’s correlation to cults of flies which were rife during this period. Other accounts give him a monstrous appearance with a forked tongue, tapering tail, ram horns, and a red or purple hue. These accounts however agree that Beelzebub has wings and possesses the ability to fly. He is described as a cruel entity that has no sentiment for human mortals.
Significant Symbol – Fly
Beelzebub is one of the highest ranking demons in Hell as previously mentioned. He is essentially one of the rulers of Hell belonging to the highest circle in the hellish realm. Beelzebub, Lucifer, and Astaroth form the unholy trinity which is the highest level of the demonic hierarchy – some accounts recognize Leviathan in place of Astaroth. In fact, some accounts such as the Christian bible posit that Beelzebub and Satan are the same demonic entity. Still, others posit that he usurped Satan to become the highest ranking demon in Hell. In his demonic state, Beelzebub is said to preside over the Order of the Fly.
With Beelzebub’s ability to possess an individual and make them engage in horrific acts, this demon forms a potentially useful asset for malevolent magicians. Given his high ranking, the demon is able to send out lesser demons to possess people and do his bidding. Therefore, he can be used to target the enemies of the conjuror and would represent a considerable advantage seeing as there are no demonic entities that can surpass his might. Therefore, Beelzebub is a formidable weapon that cannot be wielded by the frail or inexperienced conjuror.
The Message
Am I in danger? Should I take preventive measures?
When the Moon appears in a reading, I am immediately made aware of the potential for demonic possession – this is because I would not use this demon to target others in any way. If not myself then I examine people around me for changes in behavior. If someone I am close to does something horrific then this becomes a tell-tale sign of Beelzebub at work. If I notice signs of confusion then I will assume it is a phase during which they are under attack. This would necessitate the intervention of a very experienced magician.
I believe that Beelzebub is a very evil entity whose role is only to cause misery to human beings. If one can harness his powers then they are in possession of a formidable weapon that even poses a threat to them. By possessing human bodies and compelling them towards deviant behavior, this demon essentially introduces negativity within the human experience. This is consistent with him imparting fear, anxiety, or confusion among human mortals.
