Scrying through a mirror, also known as “mirror scrying” or “catoptromancy,” is a form of divination where you use a reflective surface to gain insights or communicate with spirits and demons. This practice is rooted in various occult traditions and folklore.
Here’s a guide on how to approach mirror scrying:
Preparation
- Choose Your Mirror:
- Mirror Type: Traditionally, a dark or black mirror is used, but any mirror can work. A black mirror is said to help with focusing and may be less likely to produce distracting reflections. You can also use a regular mirror painted black or a piece of obsidian.
- Cleanliness: Ensure the mirror is clean and free of smudges or blemishes.
- Set the Environment:
- Location: Find a quiet, comfortable place where you won’t be disturbed. The environment should be conducive to focus and concentration.
- Lighting: Dim the lights to create a conducive atmosphere. The idea is to minimize external distractions and reflections. You can use candles or a small light source behind you or to the side to avoid glare.
- Prepare Yourself:
- Relaxation: Enter a relaxed and meditative state. This can involve deep breathing exercises, meditation, or visualization techniques to calm your mind and prepare it for the scrying process.
- Intention Setting: Clearly define your intention or question. Focus on what you want to achieve through scrying, whether it’s seeking information, communication with spirits, or exploring other realms.
The Scrying Process
- Gaze into the Mirror:
- Position: Sit comfortably in front of the mirror. You can sit or stand, but ensure that you are relaxed and able to maintain your focus.
- Gazing Technique: Gently gaze into the mirror without staring intensely. Allow your eyes to relax and your focus to soften. The goal is to enter a state of passive observation.
- Enter a Trance State:
- Trance Induction: As you gaze, allow yourself to enter a trance-like state. This can be facilitated by focusing on the mirror’s surface and allowing your mind to become absorbed in its reflections.
- Maintain Focus: Keep your intention or question in mind. Avoid letting your thoughts wander too much, but don’t force anything. Let images or sensations come naturally.
- Observe and Interpret:
- Images and Symbols: Pay attention to any images, symbols, or changes in the mirror’s surface. These might appear as shapes, patterns, or even visions.
- Communication: If you’re attempting to communicate with spirits or demons, be respectful and clear in your inquiries. Listen for any impressions, voices, or feelings that arise.
- End the Session:
- Closing: When you’re ready to end the session, gently break your focus and thank any entities you may have interacted with. If you’ve been using a dark mirror or other ritual tools, ensure they are properly cleansed and stored.
- Grounding: Ground yourself after the session. This can involve physical activities like walking, eating, or drinking water to help you return to your normal state of consciousness.
Viewing Demons & Spirits through Scrying
Let me share this with you before we even begin – Scrying is not particularly easy especially if you are brand-new to magic.
Scrying can be a useful means to contact Demons and spirits, to foretell the future, and to secure answers to questions. A black mirror is ideal for these purposes. You could use other objects such as a crystal ball, or a bowl of water, but these methods are even harder to learn, especially if you’re brand-new to this type of divination method. We can talk about those tools on other pages, but for now we are just focusing on the magic mirror.
Although the mirror is a reflective tool, magically it’s also believed to possess powers of absorption. Like a crystal, mirrors absorb and store information. Anything once reflected in a mirror, particularly over an extended period of time, is “stored” and may be accessed for future use. It also bears a reputation as a soul catcher. Whether this use is positive or malefic depends upon the intent of the spell-caster.
It is most commonly used for:
- Scrying
- Spirit summoning
- Spirit Communication
- Protective magic
- Demonic messages
- Divination
- Spell Work
The earliest mirrors were not made from glass but from natural materials that could be polished until they showed a reflection. Traditionally, Obsidian was the material of choice in the making of a black mirror. Obsidian is a natural form of volcanic glass. It is very consistent and flawless and can be polished to a very high standard which makes it perfect for scrying. Obsidian also provides protection from negativity. It is also a very good grounding stone.
Substitutions for a black mirror include a dark bowl of black liquid or a shiny black object, large enough to focus upon. A standard glass mirror is not suitable most of the time, as you will be more prone to look at yourself. However, if your room is dark and you are working via candlelight, it could be a good opportunity to practice your skills.
If you want to make your own black mirror, here are some tips.
- The cycle of the Full Moon is the best time to create a black mirror, as the moon rules the third eye and psyche.
- Using a pain of glass, paint one side of it with matte black enamel. You will probably need to use several coats of paint.
- Allow the paint to dry.
- Mount the mirror on cardboard or similar.
- Place in a picture frame if desired
- Consecrate the mirror as you desire, and place it onto a stand, and you are ready.
Other options include:
- Inscribe spirit sigils on the back
- Consecrate – Formulas may be obtained from many classical grimoires, such as The Key of Solomon or The Black Pullet. It is recommended that you use your own blood for ink; dragon’s blood ink would be a good substitute.
- Hoodoo option – Bury the mirror at a crossroads under the Full Moon, marking the spot so that you can retrieve it later. Dig it up after three days.
My last tip is to buy the largest mirror that you can afford. Obsidian can be expensive, however, this is a lifetime investment, and when you buy a 2-inch mirror, you have a 2-inch possibility of seeing the spirit clearly 🙂 The small ones are great for when you’re traveling, but I don’t particularly like them for working at home.
Brass Stand – holding the Mirror can be purchased in our store.
When you become proficient at seeing spirits through the dark lens, you may wish to wear one yourself and be able to use it from time to time no matter where you’re at. You’ll be amazed at what you’ll start to be able to see when looking through your peripheral vision into a small mirror and scanning your surroundings.
Did you know……
Mirrors are sometimes used as negative spiritual entity detectors, something like a metaphysical cross between a smoke detector and a mousetrap. In theory, any large, powerful mirror is capable of detecting spirits.
Scrying Mirror Empowerment Ritual
Charging the mirror – Demonic Connection/Consecration Ritual:
During a full moon
- Go into a slight trance.
- Place a paper or parchment of the Sigil of Astaroth on top of the face of the black mirror, and place both on your altar. Astaroth is the Goddess of prophecy. Alternatively, you can direct your conversation to Lucifer exclusively.
- Write the following prayer on a clean piece of paper (modify this to suit the spirit you work with, and always remember I work with Lucifer as my top Demon, and every other Demon is under Him):
Hear me Lucifer, I ask in your name, that the forces of darkness bestow their powers of prophesy upon this mirror; that I may use this magickal medium to contact any Demons I may call forth, to scry upon for the revelation of secrets, and knowledge that is unknown to me.
In the name of Lucifer, I petition Ashtaroth, to bestow the blessing of prophesy and all the powers related, thereof upon this mirror.
All of this, I ask in your name, Lucifer. So it is done.
- At the height of your ritual, recite the prayer aloud, and when finished light it in the flame of a black candle on the left side of your altar.
- Place the burning paper in a bowl to burn.
- With each breath, vibrate the energy into your mirror.
- Visualize the energy entering the mirror.
You should be able to judge when the mirror is fully empowered and feel the stored energy leaving you.
To use the mirror:
- Position the mirror so it is at a comfortable level. You should be sitting comfortably when scrying. The room should be quiet and dimly lit, preferably with candlelight.
- To begin a scrying session, enter into a trance, and imagine the mirror is black liquid water, jet-black like a well.
- Fix your gaze upon the mirror.
- Soften your gaze. Start to focus your vision to look sideways to your left and right, without actually moving your eyeballs. This is peripheral vision.
- Begin deep breathing while focusing on what you’re trying to achieve. This will be key in any level of success. Perform breathing exercises for at least 30 breaths.
- Take notice of what you see without looking “hard if you do see anything. Do not focus your vision. Do not focus on your face.
- You could spend 15 minutes here just observing and seeing what comes forth..
- To take it to the next level you could request a spirit come forth to answer your questions. That is the case, you should have skill and ability in one area to be able to connect to the communication.
Be patient, for the ability to see images of spirits and events will come with practice.
With experience, one will be able to call upon visions at will. An adept can experience visions that involve all five senses when scrying into the mirror; this can take some time, persistence, and practice. Demons can touch the scryer, carry on lengthy conversations, and interact on a more personal level. The visions can begin to exist outside of the mirror and on all sides and surround the scryer.
Protecting your mirror when not in use
When not in use, keep the mirror should be wrapped in silk to keep the energy from escaping and kept in a safe place where others will not disturb it.
Optional Moon Charging
The energy will need to be replenished every so often. You will have to place your mirror in a window or out of doors under a full Moon to absorb the lunar energies. To do this, breathe in energy from the Moon into your heart chakra and exhale it into the mirror from your hand chakras. If you are open, you will see with your third eye, and feel when the mirror is fully empowered, and sense when it needs to be recharged.
Becoming “friends” with your Mirror
Many students will say that they didn’t have any luck seeing anything through the “looking Glass”. My first question will be, “how many times did you try?” The most common answer, as you may have guessed, is just “once”. I don’t know many times in my life where I have begun to learn something new, and I’m able to grasp it the very second I learned it. Typically it takes time and dedication to learn a new skill. I believe it is doubt which keeps the new student to the dark arts with such high expectations. People don’t really believe in magic but would like to live a magical life. Is this true for you? Do you need proof that magic exists? There’s no judgment if you do need that proof, however, if this is you, you will not be dedicated and serious about learning, and perhaps you would like to spend your time doing something more productive which will bring you the desired pleasurable result 🙂
Patience is always the issue when it comes to the magic student. I know it’s a boring topic. But it’s the truth that most students are not patient nor persistent. When you have expectations, you will be very disappointed with the results. The key to success as a spellcaster, I believe anyway, is to really work on your visualization and your breathing techniques, and then take those skills into every level of magic you practice including scying.
