Who is Balam?

Balam is one of the more powerful demons in hell. More specifically, he is a grand duke and 51st of the 72 demons entrapped by King Solomon [1].

Like the rest of the Goetic Demons, Balam is a fallen angel. He commands a legion of 40 lesser demons [2].

The Enn Pronunciation of his name is Lirach tasa vefa wehl Balam

Among his attributes is the skill to astutely tell the past, present and future [3].

Additionally, he can make human beings invisible or exceptionally intuitive [2]. The former ability was especially important in the past for instance due to military reasons. This intuition encompasses cunning, finesse and other mental persuasions.

APPEARANCE

Balam is depicted as a naked man riding a bear with a hawk in his hand. He has flaming eyes which shoot fire and the tail of a snake.

Other depictions portray him as a naked woman similarly riding a bear.

His appearance is that of a 3 headed man – one head is that of a man, another is that of a bull whilst the last one is of a ram [4]. He also has crimson flaming eyes and a serpentine tail. He is depicted as carrying a hawk and riding naked abreast a bear. It is noteworthy that there are other depictions of him as a naked woman riding atop a furious bear [4].

His voice is described as harsh and hoarse [1]. He is presumably named after the biblical magician by the same name.

ABILITIES

He can grant the gift of invisibility to any man who so desires upon evocation [1]. Additionally, he can tell of things past present and future perfectly.

Another ability of Balam is that he can grant cunning / wit to any man.

SUMMONING OF BALAM

Like other Goetic Demons, summoning of Balam requires the conjuror to be in the right frame of mind and this is no undertaking for the faint-hearted.

Additionally, one has to seek a quiet place void of any disturbance / distractions.

Other requirements are the scrying mirror and high quality incense as the demon may manifest through either of these.

  • A pentagram is not necessary although the sigil should be conspicuous.
  • The following invocation should then be spoken:

I conjure, charge, and command ye, and every of ye, Sirrael, Malanthan, Thamaor, Falaur, and Sitrami, ye infernal kings, to put into this circle the spirit Balam, learned and expert in those things past. I charge ye, ye noble kings, that the said spirit may teach, show, and declare unto me, and to my companions, at all hours and minutes, both night and day, the truth of all things, both bodily and ghostly, in this world, whatsoever I shall request or desire, declaring also to me my very name. And this I command in thy part to do, and to obey thereunto, as unto thy own lord and master.” [7]

  • Once his presence is felt, the conjuror asks the query and dismisses the demon upon completion of the process.

WARNINGS

Like all the other Goetic Demons, Balam can be considered indifferent to mankind. This does not imply malice or any inclination towards love. In this regard, it is especially important that great care is taken when dealing with this demon.

It is also very important that one fulfils the end of the bargain when dealing with this demon, like all others.
